Nothing new
  • 1842 Chadwick linked health to housing
  • Black report , late 20th century English House
Condition Survey etc found -Vulnerable groups,
including the elderly, the very young and those
suffering from long-term ill health, are at
particular risk. These groups also have the
greatest exposure to many specific hazards due to
the lengthy periods that they spend indoors.
    People with health problems are
disproportionately likely to occupy the least
health-promoting segments of the housing stock, a
factor that may exacerbate their health problems.
The Acheson Report, Independent inquiry into
    inequalities in health, specifically recommends
that policies should be established to improve
insulation and heating systems in new and
    existing buildings.

Identifying need evidence base

  • How is this evidenced
  • What are the key HSCWB Issues

WHO
  • Healthy housing is a comprehensive concept taking
into consideration a variety of factors
contributing to the quality of housing and
housing environments. Such a concept of "healthy
housing" covers the provision of functional and
adequate physical, social and mental conditions
for health, safety, hygiene, comfort and privacy.
Still, a healthy home is not a specially designed
house that is merely a vision, but is also
represented by a residential setting that is
capable to fulfil the expectations of the
residents in respect of safety, comfort and
    hygiene.

  • Improving standards fabric, energy, efficiency,
    social inclusion, reducing inequalities
