  • Seeing the World in Context

What is ITEAS?
  • ITEAS a new centre of excellence built from the
    individual strengths of University of Dundees
    established American Studies, and Centre for
    European Studies and Transatlatic programmes.
  • ITEAS aims to influence and engage with
    policy-makers

A bit of background
  • The School of American Studies started 32 years
    ago with an aim of developing interdisciplinary
    study. It was founded with grant donations from
    partners such as BP
  • Began with 12 students
  • Grown to 250 students and 20 members of staff
  • The only programme in Scotland to offer both
    Single and Joint Honours undergraduate degrees

  • Contemporary European Studies (CES) followed in
    1979 and has gone from strength to strength
    incorporating trips to continental Europe as well
    as supporting the European Documentation Centre,
    which is an archival source for postgraduate and
    undergraduate student research. CES offers a
    wide range of studies encompassing History,
    English, Geography, Politics, Philosophy,
    Economics, Education, Law and Planning, as well
    as language studies.

  • Transatlantic Studies
  • A new undergraduate initiative to widen the scope
    of study and bridging CES and American Studies
    together by looking principally at contemporary
    issues affecting Europe, America and the
    Circumatlantic world.
  • The first result is the offering of the
    interdisciplinary first-year course The Changing
    World Order since 1945

Beyond the Classroom
  • In addition to Undergraduate teaching and
    Postgraduate research we are intimately involved
    with the community (local and beyond)
  • Specialist speakers for TV, Radio, and other
    media events
  • Regular speakers to professional, business,
    social groups such as the American Consulate, the
    DAR, Institute for Contemporary Scotland,
    International Business Womens groups, and a host
    of societies

  • We go into schools, academies, and colleges to
    give talks both to student classes as well as
    teachers training days.

  • Issues in Contemporary Europe
  • International Politics
  • The American Civil War
  • Many course topics offered in Highers and
    Advanced Highers
  • We contribute to the Academic, Professional, and
    Social life of Scotland and beyond

The Institute is up and running

    in New York as well as Universities in North
    Carolina, South Carolina, and New Hampshire,
    greatly expanding our partnerships.
  • Extensive links through Erasmus with universities
    in many countries in continental Europe,
    especially France, Germany, and Spain.

    Lecturer in November
  • Successful track record hosting conferences for
    the Transatlantic Studies Association, with
    funding from NATO, the American Embassy, and
    Baylor University, and the Scottish Association
    for the Study of America, with funding provided
    by NCR, Motorola, Curtis Fine Papers, US
    Consulate, Galgon Industries, and even the Old
    Course Hotel.
  • Successfully hosted conferences on a variety of
    European issues, with funding from the EU and
    research councils

    scholar was our first speaker on the topic of
    Anti-Europeanism in America and Anti-Americanism
    in Europe
  • Lectures will alternate between Transatlantic,
    European and American specialists from both the
    academic world and the public world
