What is Mentoring?

• A Mentor--
• is defined as a knowledgeable and experienced
  guide, a trusted ally advocate, and a caring
  role model.
• helps discover the potential within her sisters
  to succeed in school, Gamma Phi Beta, and their
  future lives.
• nurtures potential through friendship and
  support.
• Mentoring--
• is a reciprocal relationship with give and take.

  every contact with a sister counts every

Hazing

• An act or attitude which places members or new
  members in a lesser position within the
  organization than other members
• Any expectation to participate in activities or
  perform tasks, duties, or tests in order to gain
  approval or acceptance within the organization,
  including expectations for new members beyond
  what is called for in the sanctioned new member
  program
• When individual members associate new membership
  with certain responsibilities which are not asked
  of other (initiated) members
• Anything intended to embarrass an individual or
  group, which is intended to create an undue
  hardship or burden, which could be considered
  degrading, undignified, or humiliating, or which
  risks emotional or physical harm, regardless of
  the persons willingness to participate.

Practices Considered Hazing

• Preventing new members from wearing Gamma Phi
  Beta letters
• Withholding date of initiation or information on
  the New Member program from new members
• Expecting new members to participate in
  activities as a new member class, beyond new
  member meetings
• Unnecessary blindfolding or scavenger hunts
• Wearing anything other than a new member pin to
  identify new member status
• Quizzing new members in any way beyond the exam
  used in the new member program
• Holding a new member event that prohibits new
  members from getting enough sleep or having
  enough time to study
• Making troubling sounds during initiation
• Requiring specific scholarship and study habits

What Should New Members Expect from Gamma Phi
Beta?

• All Gamma Phi Beta New Members should expect they
  will
• be informed of all expectations
• join an organization, not a dis-organization
• feel nurtured, supported, wanted, loved and
  needed
• feel that they are a part of a growing sisterhood
• develop new interpersonal and leadership skills
• be respected as individuals and as members of the
  group
• receive assistance in adjusting to the campus
  environment, college life, and sorority
  responsibilities
• not to be placed in a subservient position
• not fear older members
• have fair treatment

Mentor Responsibilities

• Help mentee become assimilated into the chapter
  and accompany her to chapter activities.
• Introduce mentee to other initiated members
• Maintain an ongoing interest in the academic
  progress of mentee and ensure that necessary
  assistance is provided.
• Guide mentee in maintaining Gamma Phi Betas high
  standards, especially by example.
• Serve as a mentor to her mentee.
• Encourage mentee to participate in chapter and
  campus activities.
• Communicate and spend time with mentee on a
  regular basis.
• Participate in and support her mentee throughout
  the Crescent Values Programs.

How Can We Mentor Our New Members?

• Communicate regularly and keep New Members
  informed of all chapter activities
• Spend time getting to know each other
• Introduce New Members to initiated members, key
  alumnae, and campus personnel
• Continually acquaint and re-acquaint New Members
  with Gamma Phi Betas values, policies, and
  resources
• Model and live the commitment standards we hope
  to foster in otherslead by example
• Guide New Members toward educational
  opportunities take an interest in their
  development as good members and potential leaders
• Assist others in achieving balance through time
  management
• Invite New Members to participate in spontaneous
  activities
• Help members see avoid challenges
• Provide moral support and act as a sounding board
