A few notes . . .
Online Resources
  • The University of Regina Library makes many
scholarly resources available online for students
    and faculty.
  • From your desktop you can
  • See what books and journals the library holds and
whether or not they are currently available
  • Read electronic books and electronic journals
    (8000 electronic journal titles)
  • Search electronic databases (indexes of
    subject-specific journal literature) for articles
    on your topic (225 databases)
  • And much more . . .

5
Remote access
  • Most of these resources are NOT freely available
on the Webwe pay a subscription fee so that the
U of R community can use them.
  • In order to access from off the U of R campus,
you need to authenticate (prove to the vendor
that you are affiliated with the U of R) using
your last name and barcode number.

6
Remote access
Login using your last name (all lower case) and
library barcode
OR login using your Computing Services ID and
password
7
Constructing a Search
  • Before we get to specific search tools, it pays
to know some tips and tricks that apply across
    most databases.

8
BooleanAND, OR, NOT
  • I would like some information about ethics or
morals in leadership. Im not sure which
termethics / morals--this database uses. How
(OR, AND, NOT) would I connect these terms?

9
Boolean, continued
  • Ethics OR morals
  • OR is used to connect synonymous concepts or
    terms
  • The more terms we connect with OR, the more
    results we retrieve.

10
Boolean, continued
  • Im trying to find information about education
leadership in healthcare organizations. How would
I connect these two terms in my search?

11
Boolean, continued
  • educational leadership AND healthcare
    organizations
  • AND retrieves items in which BOTH concepts are
    represented
  • The more terms we connect with AND, the smaller
the number of results we retrieve

12
Boolean, continued
  • I want information about leadership theories
    other than trait theory.

13
Boolean, continued
  • leadership theories NOT trait theory
  • Retrieves records where only ONE of the terms is
    present
  • Be careful when you use NOT the term you do want
may be present in an important way in documents
that also contain the word you wish to avoid.

14
Other tips
  • Truncation (, ?, etc.)
  • Limits (language, date, publication type)
  • Subject headings/descriptors

15
WebVoyage
  • The Librarys Catalogue
  • Look here for
  • Books owned by the U of R Library
  • Titles of journals (both print and electronic)
carried by the U of R Library and the years for
    which we hold subscriptions
  • DONT look here for
  • titles of individual journal articles

16
To get to WebVoyage . . .

17
Try WebVoyage
Try WebVoyage
  • What is the call number for the following book?
  • Effective Educational Leadership, edited by Nigel
Bennett, Megan Crawford, and Marion Cartwright.
  • Fred Fiedler is famous for Fiedlers contingency
theory of leadership effectiveness. Do we have
any of his books in the library? How many records
    do you see?

18
Try WebVoyage
  • On his way out the door, your professor mentions
that the author Hersey published a key work on
leadership in 1982. Use WebVoyage to locate the
    item he is referring to.
  • Hintuse Advanced Search

19
Try WebVoyage
  • Can I get this article at the U of R Library? In
    print or electronic format?

  • This is when you turn to the libraries 200
    DATABASES.
  • Questions
  • Have you used any databases in other classes?
  • What can I expect to find in these databases?
  • How is the content of these database different
    from the Internet at large?

28

Center) database is sponsored by the U.S.
Department of Education to provide extensive
    access to educational-related literature.
  • In addition to journal articles, ERIC provides
    coverage of conferences, meetings, government
    documents, theses, dissertations, reports,
    audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories,
    books and monographs.

  • - Many of the same tricks of Quick Search
(truncation, Boolean) work here but it walks you
through the process of constructing your search.
  • - More date limit options
  • - Ability to limit to only EDs

43
ERIC
  • Concern is growing that many experienced leaders
will retire in the next few years. Use Advanced
Search to see if ERIC contains any peer-reviewed

discuss the use of online/distance teaching
    methods for professional education/development.

Choices, choices
  • Describe a situation when ERIC would be your
first choice for conducting your search.
  • Describe a situation when CBCA Education would be
your first choice for conducting your search
  • Describe a situation when you would try another
    subject-specific database for conducting your
    search.

64
Other databases
  • Browse by subject at
  • http//www.uregina.ca/library/eresources/databases
    /
  • Think about your topic from a disciplinary
perspective. Who else might be writing about it?
  • Leadership and gender
  • Cost /benefit analysis of staff training

65
Citing Resources
  • Scholarship and research are based on the concept
of building on the research of others who have
studied and published on related topics.
  • You should incorporate the ideas of others in
your work, but you MUST give credit to the owner
of the idea (regardless of whether using a direct
    quotation or not)
  • My adviceerror on the side of cautionthe
    consequences are too great!

66
APA Style
