Athletic Trainers
  • Please use the term Athletic Trainer or ATC, not
    trainer
  • Responsibilities include injury prevention,
immediate injury care, clinical evaluation and
    diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and
    reconditioning, organization and administration
    and professional compliance, record keeping
  • Regulated in the Commonwealth of Virginia, all
must be licensed by Virginias Board of Medicine
  • Education minimally, must graduate from a 4 year
degree athletic training program and pass a
    national accreditation exam

4
Athletic Trainers
  • ATCs do not replace physicians, but work under
the direction of a physician. Must follow the
    recommendations of a physician.
  • If a student is under the care of physician, it
is best if the ATC is able to communicate with
the physician to provide the best care possible.
Students should supply a physicians note to the
ATC as soon as possible, when possible.

5
FCPS Athletic Trainers
  • Allied health care providers for ALL injuries of
    ALL student athletes
  • Full time employees to provide athletic health
care for ALL student athletes and be a resource
    for parents
  • All injuries must be evaluated by the ATC prior
to return to participation, regardless or
    severity or physician consultation
  • Philosophy Return the injured athlete to
participation in the quickest AND safest manner
    possible
  • ATCs interpret the students symptoms and
their bodys ability to perform, coaches make the
decision whether or not a cleared athlete plays
    in the game.

6
Team Physician
  • Dr. Bruce Zimmer
  • Orthopedic Surgeon
  • Offices with Commonwealth Orthopaedics and
    Rehabilitation
  • ATCs work under the team physician
  • Student athletes should see the ATC prior to
    seeing any physicians, if possible

7
FCPS ATC Coverage
  • Fall
  • Athletic Training Clinic hours-after school while
    practices are in session
  • All home and away games for freshman, junior
    varsity and varsity football.
  • All home field hockey, volleyball and cross
    country games/meets.
  • Stay at home rule, all home events at other
FCPS schools will have ATC coverage

8
Assumption of Risk
  • Injuries are inherent in sports, some may be
catastrophic. FCPS Athletic Training Program is
dedicated to providing the safest environment
possible. ATCs minimize the significance of
injuries by providing immediate evaluation and
treatment and minimizing the potential for
catastrophic injuries to occur, but cannot
    eliminate the possibility entirely.

9
When an athlete is hurting
  • For a problem, athlete will receive an evaluation
    and treatment in the ATR.
  • If a minor injury has occurred, a written note
may be sent home or a phone call will be made.
  • If a serious injury has occurred, the ATC will
call home. If no parent answers, we will call the
    emergency contact.
  • If the injury happens at a contest, the ATC will
speak to the parent regarding return to play
    options

10
Physicals, ECC, Devices
  • Each student must have a new physical each year,
    prior to trying out
  • ECC must be completed each season. Please update
    as needed.
  • Students who require a special device like an
inhaler, epi-pen or glucagon kit should have the
device with them at EVERY team activity. The
required paperwork should be on file in the
    school.

11
Supplements and Steroids
  • FCPS procedures dictate that no employee shall
supply, endorse, or encourage the use of
    nutritional supplements. A very common
supplement is Creatine. Creatine use does appear
to have some detrimental side effects such as
    dehydration, susceptibility to heat illness,
sever muscle cramping and muscle tendon strains.
  • Ephedra and products containing Ephedra are
listed on the FCPS banned list and shall be
    avoided. See attached memo.

12
Health Guidelines
  • Water bottles should not be shared. They should
be cleaned with soap and hot water everyday. If
shared, the mouth should not be placed on the
    top.
  • Uniforms and practice clothes should be cleaned
    daily
  • Wash linens at home regularly
  • Eat at least three meals and a snack everyday
