H5N1 in Virginia
  • On Friday, July 7th, a flock of turkeys tested
positive for antibodies to H5 on routine
    pre-slaughter surveillance
  • The virus was assumed to be low-path
  • On July11th, the National Veterinary Services
Laboratory typed the virus as an H5NI
  • Similar to strains that had been seen in
migratory birds in Maine and Canada

Composting
  • The turkeys were then composted on site
  • Windrow temperature should reach 130F within
    first week
  • Virus Isolation testing is conducted after 2
    weeks

AI Rapid Response Training
  • Purpose
  • Identify potential for human health problems
associated with cases of highly pathogenic avian
    influenza
  • Minimize the risk of spread or further human
infection if human infection or disease is
    identified
  • Provide guidance to individuals who are involved
in the response to HPAI cases and other HPAI
    exposure settings

15
AI Rapid Response Training
  • Protect against the risk of infection and disease
and minimize the risk of viral reassortment
  • Provide guidance for multi-disciplinary rapid
response teams to discuss, plan, and to
facilitate discussion between state and local
    avian influenza rapid response teams

16
AI Rapid Response Training
  • Locations
  • Shenandoah Valley
  • Eastern Shore
  • Participants
  • Health care workers

  • Environmental quality personnel
  • Game and wildlife personnel

17
AI Rapid Response Training
  • Method of Training
  • Didactic instruction
  • Facilitated discussions

18
AI Rapid Response Training
  • End Result
  • Allow people to put a name with a face
  • Establish roles and responsibilities
  • Discuss expectations and assumptions
