Title: Sentences

1
Sentences
  • The building block of a paragraph.

2
Three rules to keep in mind
  • Never let the reader lose sight of the central
    thought of the sentence.
  • Complicated thoughts need to be expressed as
    simply as possible.
  • Be prepared to use a full range of sentence forms.

3
Basic sentence consists of
  • Subject
  • Action verb or linking verb
  • Object (almost always)

4
Five sentence patterns
  • Declarative (Ethan is strong.)
  • Interrogative (Is Ethan strong?)
  • Exclamatory (How strong Ethan is!)
  • Imperative (Be strong, Ethan.)
  • Complement ahead of subject (Strong Ethan is.)

5
Loose versus Periodic
  • Loose most common, expresses the main idea first
    and then adds details
  • The young girl tripped in the forest.
  • The young girl tripped in the forest and
    hurt her ankle.
  • The young girl tripped in the forest and
hurt her ankle just minutes before the bear
    escaped from the local zoo.

6
Periodic
  • Delays completing the main idea until the end or
near the end of the sentence
  • Holds the reader in suspense.
  • The young girl, running from the bear,
tripped in the forest and hurt her ankle.

7
Warning! Warning! Warning!
  • Do not overuse periodic sentences!
  • Most likely, though, you will need to be
conscious about using them in your writing.

8
Make this loose sentence periodic
  • Construction workers labored in the hot sun for
hours before their boss allowed them a water
    break.

9
Write five sentences that use a loose structure.
  • Be sure the subject is stated at the beginning of
    the sentence.

10
Active versus Passive
  • Activesubject performs the action
  • Passivesubject receives the action
  • Active sentences are the most forceful and should
    be used more often.

11
Use passive sentences to
  • Emphasize the receiver of the actions rather than
    the perfomer
  • Write this sentence in passive voice
  • The strong, rugged man waded through murky
waters in hopes of finding the sunken treasure.
