Title: Understanding Our Genetic Code

1
Understanding Our Genetic Code
  • Evangelism and Discipleship

2
We Have Covered So Far
  • 1. Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord
  • 2. We Need the Word and the Spirit
  • 3. We Must Repent and Believe
  • 4. Forgiveness and Restitution
  • 5. Be Fruitful and Multiply

3
Evangelism and Discipleship
  • And God blessed them and God said to them, "Be
fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and
subdue it and rule over the fish of the sea and
over the birds of the sky, and over every living
thing that moves on the earth."
  • Genesis 128

4
  • "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge
of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the
    sea.
  • Habakkuk 214

5
  • After these things I looked, and behold, a great
multitude, which no one could count, from every
nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues,
standing before the throne and before the Lamb,
  • clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in
their hands and they cry out with a loud voice,
saying, "Salvation to our God who sits on the
    throne, and to the Lamb."
  •

6
I. Gods master plan to reach the
world-Discipleship or multiplication
  • Gods desire is for the whole world to be filled
with his glory, not just with people. The way
His glory is demonstrated to the Earth is through
those whose hearts are filled with His glory.
  • By preaching the gospel and having children we
add to this, but by training others to do the
    same we multiply!

7
Addition Vs. Multiplication
  • Addition
  • Multiplication
  • If 50 of us lead 1 person to the Lord every week,
at the end of the year we would have 2600
    Christians.
  • In 17 years we would have 44,200.
  • If 50 of us Lead one person to the Lord this year
we would have 100 Christians at year end.
  • If we train them all to do the same thing, we
    will double every year.
  • In 17 years we would have 6,553,600 disciples

8
The Great Commission
  • And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All
authority has been given to Me in heaven and on
    earth.
  • "Go therefore and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I commanded you and lo, I am
with you always, even to the end of the age."

9
  • Greek scholars tell us that of the four verbs
used in this sentence, three are participles that
relate to the one imperative-make disciples.
    What does this mean?
  • That going, baptizing, and teaching are all
things we do in order to get the most important
job done-make disciples! Are you ready to follow
    Jesus into His purposes?
  • Remember this is not a suggestion to be
considered, but a commandment to be followed!

10
II. What is discipleship?
  • According to Websters 1828 dictionary a disciple
    is
  • 1. A learner a scholar one who receives or
professes to receive instruction from another
  • 2. A follower an adherent to the doctrines
of another. Hence all Christians are called His
disciples, as they profess to learn and receive
    His doctrines and precepts.
  •
  • To Disciple means
  • 1. To teach to train, or bring up.
  • 2. To make disciples of to convert to
    doctrines or principles.

11
  • No one can be discipled in the faith by another
until they are first disciples of Jesus.
Discipleship does not bring you to Jesus. It
helps you to become like Him, and to learn how to
    serve Him.
  • Many Churches believe there are Christians who
arent serving God, and then there are disciples
who are. We believe that Christian and disciple
are used simultaneously in the bible to mean the
same thing. If someone is not ready to obey
Jesus in their life than they are not ready to be
    discipled!

12
  • Discipling others is the process by which a
Christian with a life worth emulating, commits
himself for an extended period of time to a few
individuals who have been won to Christ. The
purpose being to aid and guide their growth to
maturity and equip them to reproduce themselves
    in a third spiritual generation.
  • Alan Haddidian , True Discipleship

13
III. What does Jesus expect of His disciples?
  • Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone
desires to be my disciple, let him deny
himself-that is disregard, lose sight of and
forget himself and his own interests-and take up
his cross and follow me cleave steadily to Me,
conform wholly to my example in living and if
    need be in dying, also.
  • "For whoever is bent on saving his temporal life
his comfort and security here, shall lose
eternal life and whoever loses his life his
comfort and security here for My sake shall find
    life everlasting.
  • Matthew 1624-25 (AMP)

14
  • "So then, whoever of you does not
forsake-renounce, surrender claim to, give up,
say goodbye to-all that he has cannot be my
    disciple.
  • Luke 1433 (AMP)

15
Luke 1426-35
  • If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own
father and mother and wife and children and
brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life,
he cannot be My disciple. "Whoever does not
carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be
    My disciple.

16
  • "For which one of you, when he wants to build a
tower, does not first sit down and calculate the
cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?
  • "Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is
not able to finish, all who observe it begin to
ridicule him, saying, 'This man began to build
and was not able to finish.'

17
  • Many people who profess to be Christians in this
day and age are like the example of the Ostrich
    egg.
  • Weasels love to steal them from the ostrich
nests but instead of breaking them open, they
poke a small hole into the egg and suck the life
out of it. On the outside it appears to be a
normal egg, but inside it is hollow! When the
ostrich comes to sit down on the egg, the
pressure crushes it. So life will crush the
    hollow Christian.
  • Its not enough to talk the talk you have to
    walk the walk!

18
No excuses allowed!
  • And as they were going along the road, someone
said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go."
And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes,
and the birds of the air have nests, but the
Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
  • And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said,
"Permit me first to go and bury my father." But
He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own
dead but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere
    the kingdom of God.

19
  • And another also said, "I will follow You, Lord
but first permit me to say good-bye to those at
home." But Jesus said to him, "No one, after
putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is
fit for the kingdom of God.
  • Luke 957-62

20
Luke 1416-21
  • But He said to him, "A certain man was giving a
big dinner, and he invited many and at the
dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who
had been invited, 'Come for everything is ready
now.' "But they all alike began to make excuses.

21
  • The first one said to him, 'I have bought a piece
of land and I need to go out and look at it
    please consider me excused.
  • "And another one said, 'I have bought five yoke
of oxen, and I am going to try them out please
    consider me excused.'

22
  • "And another one said, 'I have married a wife,
and for that reason I cannot come.'
  • "And the slave came back and reported this to
his master. Then the head of the household became
angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into
the streets and lanes of the city and bring in
here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'

23
IV. All radical World-Changers Have Disciples
  • John the Baptist
  • And John's disciples and the Pharisees were
fasting and they came and said to Him, "Why do
John's disciples and the disciples of the
Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?
  • Mark 218

24
  • Paul
  • And when many days had elapsed, the Jews plotted
together to do away with him, but their plot
became known to Saul. And they were also watching
the gates day and night so that they might put
him to death but his disciples took him by
night, and let him down through an opening in
the wall, lowering him in a large basket.
  • And when he had come to Jerusalem, he was trying
to associate with the disciples and they were
all afraid of him, not believing that he was a
    disciple.
  • Acts 923-26

25
  • Jesus
  • And it was at this time that He went off to the
mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in
prayer to God. And when day came, He called His
disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom
    He also named as apostles
  • Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his
brother and James and John and Philip and
Bartholomew and Matthew and Thomas James the
son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the
Zealot Judas the son of James, and Judas
    Iscariot, who became a traitor.
  • Luke 612-16

26
  • Jesus taught the multitudes, sent out 70, chose
12, spent extra time with three, and was closest
    to 1

27
V. The Goal of Discipleship
  • And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature,
and in favor with God and men.
  • 1. Jesus grew in wisdom Mentally
  • 2. Jesus grew in stature Physically
  • 3. Jesus grew in favor with God Spiritually
  • 4. Jesus grew in favor with man Socially

28
  • And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and
teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may
present every man complete in Christ.
  • And for this purpose also I labor, striving
according to His power, which mightily works
    within me.
  • Colossians 128-29

29
I John 212-14
  • I am writing to you, little children, because
your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake.
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know
Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing
to you, young men, because you have overcome the
evil one. I have written to you, children,
    because you know the Father.

30
  • I have written to you, fathers, because you know
Him who has been from the beginning. I have
written to you, young men, because you are
strong, and the word of God abides in you, and
you have overcome the evil one.

31
VI. We Follow After Faithful Men
  • Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of
God to you and considering the result of their
    conduct, imitate their faith.
  • Hebrews 137

32
VII. We Teach and Train Faithful Men
  • Now it is required that those who have been given
    a trust must prove faithful.
  • 1 Corinthians 42 (NIV)
  •

33
  • You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace
that is in Christ Jesus. And the things which
you have heard from me in the presence of many
witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who
will be able to teach others also.
  • 2 Timothy 21- 2

34
Matt 2818-20
  • And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All
authority has been given to Me in heaven and on
earth. "Go therefore and make disciples of all
the nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all that I commanded you and lo,
I am with you always, even to the end of the
    age."

35
  • In discipleship we go beyond the classic example
of classroom teaching which is important, to the
    next
  • level of instruction- training. Discipleship is
easier Caught than taught! Jesus said to teach
our disciples to observe the things He has
commanded. This is more than just knowing facts
or principles, but doing them. Most Christians
understand what prayer, evangelism, or giving is.
Most will agree wholeheartedly that they are
good things that everyone should do, but very few
    are actually doing them. Why?

36
  • Because they lack discipline, and often are
ignorant of spiritual truths. Were Jesus own
    disciples any different? Discipleship involves
opening up your life to someone and saying I want
to be a man or woman of God, will you help me?
  • It involves the impartation of your life into
someone else. It requires lots of time, energy,
money, and often brings rejection and
disappointment. But like many have discovered
it can bring the greatest reward of all, seeing
someones life changed for the glory of God.

37
  • Brethren, join in following my example, and
observe those who walk according to the pattern
    you have in us.
  • Philipians 317
  •

38
  • Do not be deceived "Bad company corrupts good
    morals.
  • 1 Corinthians 1533
  •

39
  • The things you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me, practice these things and
the God of peace shall be with you.
  • Phillipians 49
