Temperature records
  • The longest measured temperature records from the
    Baltic area cover about 250 years. The data show
    that there were warm periods during the latter
    half of the 18th century, and that the 19th
    century was a relatively cool period. An early
    20th century warming culminated in the 1930s,
    followed by a smaller cooling that lasted until
    the 1960s.

  • The average annual precipitation is 717
    millimeters on the coast and 490 millimeters in
    the eastern part of the country. The growing
    season lasts 202 days in the western part of the
    country and 169 days in the eastern part.

Iron wolf
  • Gediminas, went on a hunting trip in the holy
    woods of the Valley of Sventaragis.Grand Duke
    settled for the night near a hill at the
    convergence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. He
    fell asleep soundly and had a dream. A huge iron
    wolf was standing on top of this hill and the
    sound of hundreds of other wolves inside it
    filled all the surrounding fields and woods.
    After the hunting trip and consulted the pagan
    priest. And the priest told him. The iron wolf
    means a formidable castle and town which will be
    established by the ruler on this site. The city
    will stand as strong as iron and its walls will
    protect the land from its enemies. The massive
    sound dwelled inside the wolf, symbolized the
    fame of the city shall echo beyond their borders
    and proclaim throughout the centuries the glory
    of Lithuania. Gediminas heeded and pleased with
    the priests reveal of his dream. He begin to
    summon artisans and craftsmen around the country
    and Europe to design and construct his new strong
    and beautiful kingdom, which would surround this
    hill where he had the dream of the iron wolf.
    Upon the completion Gediminas moved his home,
    signaling the establishment of a new capital for
    his country Vilnius.

LITHUANIAN TRADITIONAL FOODS
  • Lithuanians like to eat good, tasty and filling
    foods.
  • They cook prepare simple but tasty foods. A good
    cook can create delicious meals using simple
    ingredients.
  • Before food was prepared using only seasonal
    products, however during the last twenty-five
    years, fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs have
    been available all year round, imported or grown
    locally.
  • The same applies to meat, now more fresh meat is
    used than salted or smoked.
  • A good example is potato cake - kugelis, which
    Lithuanians adapted from the German kitchen.
  • This has now become a favorite dish throughout
    Lithuania.

  • Lithuanian folk music is based on songs which
    include romantic,wedding songs, work songs and
    more archaic war songs.
  • Lithuania is the home of many folk music
    festivals.

Rock and popular music
  • The communist government of the Lithuanian SSR
    criticized rock music which was considered a
    decadent and corupting cultural invasion from the
    West.
  • In the 1980s rock bands Foje, Antis and Bix made
    a big impact in Lithuania. In 1987,88 and 89
    Lithuania saw several big rock festivals such as
    Roko Maras. It was connected to the ideology of
    Sajudis.
