Title: The M.A.D.D. Mallard

1
The M.A.D.D. Mallard
  • Mid-Term Presentation
  • February 26th, 2003

2
Design Team
  • Project Advisor
  • Dr. John P. Donohoe, P.E.
  • Team Leader
  • Channing Hodges, E.E.
  • Team Members
  • Chadrick Mason, E.E.
  • Trent Lee, E.E.
  • Bledar Andoni, E.E.

3
Problem
  • Standard duck decoys are motionless
  • Spinning-wing models have motion, but are
    stationary and expensive
  • Shaker models create ripples that enhance entire
    spread, but have no movement
  • No remote control capability

4
Solution
  • Design autonomous duck decoy that simulates
    swimming of actual duck
  • Include functionality of Shaker decoy
  • Implement remote control capability
  • Design product to withstand normal hunting
    conditions

5
Design Constraints
  • FCC-Compliant operation in the 27MHz 75MHz RF
    Systems
  • Hands free operation
  • 6-8 hours of battery life
  • Location tracking to maintain a 20 foot operating
    radius
  • 75 foot remote control operating range
  • Water-resistant packaging
  • Final retail price approximately 225

Remote Control
  • Possible user selections Sleep/Power off, 3
    different modes of operation
  • FCC-Compliant RF Operation within 75.4 76 MHz
    Frequencies
  • Operation Range 75 feet
  • Powered by 4 AA Batteries

9
Transmitter Decoy
  • Standard size water-keel decoy 15 L x 6 W
  • Can be string-weighted or pole-mounted
  • Powered by 8 AA batteries
  • Transmits a continuous signal
  • FCC-Compliant RF Operation within 26.96 27.28
    MHz Frequencies

10
Elsema FMT-212 Transmitter
  • Continuous Transmitting Capability
  • Operating Voltage 12V
  • Operating Current 500mA
  • Transmitting Frequency 27.145 MHz
  • Dimensions 140 X 60 X 34 mm
  • Weight 225 grams

11
M.A.D.D. Mallard Mechanical Decoy
  • Magnum size water-keel decoy 18 L x 7 W
  • Larger size allows room for hardware inside
  • Powered by a 9.6V Rechargeable Battery
  • Weight 6 pounds
  • Water resistant

13
Elsema FM-212T Receiver
  • Reads in location signal from transmitter decoy
  • Matched Receiver to FMT-212
  • Operating Voltage 12V
  • Operating Current 44mA
  • Receiving Frequency 27.145 MHz
  • Dimensions 96 X 70 X 20 mm
  • Weight 67 grams

14
PIC17C44 Microcontroller
  • Monitors Signal Strength
  • Performs Random Routes
  • Controls Motors and Rudder
  • Operating Voltage 5V
  • 8K EPROM Program Memory
  • 454 bytes DATA Memory
  • 40-pin DIP Package

15
Possible Modes Of Operation
  • 3 possible user-selected modes
  • Self-propelled
  • Shaker
  • Combination of the two
  • Only selectable via remote control
  • Mechanical decoy will operate in self-propelled
mode if remote control is not present

16
Self-Propelled Mode Flowchart
17
C.R.O.S.S. Correction Module
  • C.R.O.S.S. will Control the Radius of Operation
via Signal Strength by performing the necessary
propulsion methods in order to maintain the 20
    foot operating radius
