Vegetables and Fruit
Until the 1580s, vegetables and fruit were less
popular. By the end of the century there were
many more vegetable and fruit gardens, and many
new varieties were available, but only for the
rich. From Europe came raspberries and
gooseberries. From America came peppers,
pumpkins and potatoes.

Bread
The rich ate bread made of flour. The poor
people ate bread made out of rye or ground
acorns.
Butter and Eggs
Rich people would not eat these because they
thought that they were poor peoples food.
5
Sugar
This came from Asia and was very expensive and
hard to get. Honey was more usually used to
sweeten food.
Drink
The rich drank wine from France and Spain. The
poor people drank ale, cider or buttermilk.
