Title: Food chain game

1
Food chain game
2
  • Each student will be assigned a role to play in
simulation food chain. You will be either a
grasshopper, a shrew or a hawk.
  • The grasshoppers will be given a orange sheet
paper. The shrews will be given a blue sheet of
paper. The hawks will be given a green sheet of
paper. You also be given a piece of double stick
tape. You have to put the sheet of paper on your
shirt. The sheet of paper MUST BE EASILY SEEN.

3
Grasshoppers
  • Each grasshopper collects a small paper bag from
me. Write your initials on it. This container
    will represent your stomach.
  • When we get outside, I will spread the food.
You can only pick up each piece of food ONE AT
A TIMEIF YOU PICK UP MORE THAN ONE AT A TIMEYOU
    DIE
  • The shrews and hawks watch their prey from the
sidelines. You must stop collecting the food
    when I say.

4
Shrews
  • After I tell the grasshoppers to stop collecting
food, you may tag NOT TACKLE OR PUSH A
GRASSHOPPER. You can only TAG ONE GRASSHOPPER AT
A TIME. The grasshopper should take the bag of
food and give it to you and go sit down.
  • When I say stop hunting, you should stop hunting.

5
Hawks
  • At this time, the hawks can start hunting for
shrews. Shrews may hunt again for any
grasshoppers who are still alive, following the
same rules. When a shrew is tagged (NOT TACKLED
OR PUSHED) the hawk takes the food bags and the
shrew goes and to sit on the sidelines. The hawk
can only TAG ONE SHREW AT A TIME. The hawk will
stop hunting when I say stop.

6
  • What to do when we get back in.do not eat food

7
  • Animals who are still living at the end of the
simulation should empty their food bags and count
the number of food pieces they have and fill out
    the table.
  • Animals that were consumed should find which
animal has the bag with their initials on it and
    help to complete its tables

  • In the environment in which these animals live, a
pesticide was sprayed onto the crops to prevent
damage by the grasshopper. The coffee candy
represent plants that contained the pesticide.

10
  • Grasshoppers still alive at the end of the
simulation. if you have any coffee candyyou
    are now dead
  • Shrews still alive at the end of the
simulationif half or more of food is coffee
    candyyou too are dead
  • The hawk with the highest number of food pieces
lives at this time. However, because it has
consumed pesticide, it will not have any baby
hawks, because the egg shells it produces will be
    so thin.

11
Question
  • Was the pesticide effective killing the
    grasshopper?
  • Did the farmers want to kill the shrew and hawk?
Would the farmers want these animals to live?
    Why or why not?

12
Assessment
  • As a class, prepare a series of radio commercial
on a specific animal and how pesticides affect
animals. Each lab team should write a script of
at least 5 minutes and act them out. The script
should be on an animal of interest to them. The
scripts should be entertaining, but factual. The
    due date on this 1-11-07
