Title: SELF SUFFICIENCY IN CONCENTRATE FEED

1
  • SELF SUFFICIENCY IN CONCENTRATE FEED
  • FOR
  • RED MEAT AND MILK PRODUCTION

2
AGENDA
  • Background
  • Reasons of Low Self Sufficiency
  • Types of Feeds
  • Challenges for feed
  • Strategy to encourage the red meat and milk
    production in UAE

3
Back Ground
  • As per the data form Ministry of Environment and
water status of self sufficiency of UAE in
different categories of Food are as follow
  • Dates and Fisheries 100
  • Vegetables 39
  • Milk and Dairy products 55
  • Meat and Poultry 15 25
  • Means self sufficiency in terms of poultry and
meat, and more specially red meat is very low.
  • This issue was neglected so many years due to the
availability of meat being imported form other
    countries like Australia, India, Pakistan,
    Somalia etc.
  • Partly meat was supplied from locally reared
sheep and goat, villagers were having in their
    Izbahs / small farms.
  • With the increase in population, all this supply
    is not sufficient.

4
Reasons of Low Self Sufficiency
  • One of reason for the this low self sufficiency
is that red meat production was not started on
large scale commercial farms like it was done for
    dairy products.
  • By commercialized farming for meat producing
animals can be managed properly considering cost
and other factors. To secure food / meat supply
    in the country.
  • Fish was preferred protein source historically in
UAE, red meat consumption partly was replaced by
poultry meat, due to knowledge of heart problems.
  • Poultry farming started as industry and there are
some arround15 farms are doing poultry farming
on reasonably large scale, also they are is
    increasing capacities.
  • Sheep and goat farming as well as beef farming
    was not taken seriously.

5
Types of Feeds
  • There are basically 6 types of feeds, where
combination of two or three are fed to animal for
    meat and milk production.
  • Roughages
  • Forages / Fodders
  • Concentrates
  • Feed concentrates
  • Vitamin-Mineral Premixes
  • Total Mix ration (TMR)
  • Roughages
  • Feed materials higher in fiber and low in TDN
    (total digestible nutrients) are called
    roughages.
  • Straw after harvest of crops
  • e.g. wheat straw, rice straw, wheat bran etc

6
Types of Feeds
  • 2. Forages / Fodders
  • Feed materials higher in fiber and bit low in
TDN, and having some protein value are called
    roughages.
  • Fodders are of two type
  • Succulent Fodders
  • Fresh green and high in moisture.
  • Like green pastures, Field grown fodders like
    crops
  • e.g. Berseem, Alfalfa, grasses etc.
  • Dry Fodders
  • Dry, green, but low in moisture.
  • Like fodder available in the form of bales of
    20kg to 700kg.
  • e.g. Alfalfa hay, Berseem hay, Sudan grass hay.
  • 3. Concentrates
  • Protein Concentrates
  • Are used as protein sources in the ration
  • E.g. Soybean meal, sunflower meal, cotton seed
    meal, rapeseed meal etc.

7
Types of Feeds
  • 4. Feed Concentrates
  • Mixed and pelleted feeds are having all the
required nutrient for different stages of animal
are used along with roughages and forages.
  • e.g. calf starter feed, dry cow feed, dairy
    feeds,
  • calf starter, calf fattening feed, sheep feeds
    etc..
  • 5. Vitamin-Mineral Premix
  • These premix are formulated to cover the vitamins
and mineral requirements of the animal at
different age and stage of production.
  • These premixes are either used in feed
concentrates or total mix ration in the farm.
  • E.g. calf premix, dry cow premix, milking cow
    premix etc.

8
Types of Feeds
  • 6. Total Mix Ration (TMR)
  • At farm level for different groups of animals,
different rations are made according to the
requirement of animal at different production
    status and age etc.
  • In TMR, ingredients, like fodders, roughages,
concentrates, grains and Premix are added and
mixed on daily bases for feeding to the animals
    in the herd.
  • This type of feeding system is mainly feasible in
    large farms.

9
Challenges for Red Meat Production
  • There is not much production of fodders for
grazing as supplying as green fodders.
  • Most of the raw materials used in feed are being
imported from other countries, therefore freight
cost is added in the cost of local production.
  • High price of raw materials is a big Challenge
    for the animal production
  • There is enough supply available in the market
with imported meat and milk, affecting the
    marketing final product.
  • Market supply and price is mostly fluctuating.
  • Interest of investor in the field of mutton, beef
and dairy farming is comparatively less than the
other fields, like banking, real state and other
    business.

10
Strategy To Encourage The Red Meat And Milk
Production In UAE
  • Governments plan for the 5 year or 10 for the
growth of red meat and milk production is
    important, considering existing farms, feed
supply and market of the final product at
    reasonable price.
  • Investors should be encouraged by providing low
    interest loans.
  • Commercial sheep as well as beef farming should
    be encouraged.
  • Guidelines for establishment of farms and its
operation need to be easily accessible.
  • To improve the mutton yield of existing animals
in the country concentrated feed should be fed,
    instead of mixes.
  • Camel farming for dairy as well as for meat
production should be encouraged to have benefit
from the existing population of camels in
    country.
  • Better breeding programs and health facilities
need to be available for increasing population
and health status of these animals.
