Title: Grappa: Grid access portal for physics applications Status

1
Grappa Grid access portal for physics
applications Status Future WorkGriPhyN
AHMApril 2002
  • Shava Smallen
  • Extreme! Computing Laboratory Department of
    Physics
  • Indiana University

2
Motivation for Grappa
  • Lots of GriPhyN/Grid services
  • Higher-level user interface
  • Common practice to use a Grid portal
  • Goal provide a Grid portal interface by which
physicists can launch and manage jobs and data

3
XCAT Science Portal
(previously known as Active Notebook Project )
  • Grid portal framework for building personal
    science portals
  • Active notebook (execution management)
  • HTML pages to describe the features of the
notebook and how to use it
  • HTML forms which can be used to launch
    parameterizable scripts (transformation)
  • Parameters stored in a sub-notebook (derivation)

4
XCAT Science Portal ATLAS
  • Previous work with ATLSim
  • Athena Notebook Prototype/Demo
  • ATLAS Software Week (March)
  • Allow user to submit sequence of Athena job
options files to US-ATLAS testbed resources
  • File staging, remote job option file editing,
    basic monitoring, ad-hoc viz
  • Packaged with Pacman and posted to
    http//iuatlas.physics.indiana.edu/grappa
  • (not fully available this week due to server
    upgrade)

5
  • XCAT Science Portal GVDS?

6
Next Version
  • Virtual Data Browser Portal (VDB)
  • Currently working on design
  • Provide functionality analogous to that of a web
    browser
  • Publish virtual data create transformations and
    derivations
  • Search virtual data interface to VDC API
  • User Profile bookmarks, credential mgmt,
    resource mgmt, etc.

7
Implementation of VDB
  • Build from scratch apply XCAT Science Portal
    concepts
  • XCAT Science Portal is demo-ware
  • Build upon a web portal framework
  • Currently investigating Jetspeed (apache.org)
  • Multi-user support
  • User customization of appearance
  • Components of XCAT Science Portal will become
    obsolete
  • based on GVDS 1.0

8
Summary of Efforts
  • Demo version
  • Short-term
  • US-ATLAS testbed
  • Provide functionality to US-ATLAS Grid Analysis
    Toolkit
  • (Dan Engh - IU Physics)
  • Virtual Data Browser
  • Long-term
  • Interface to GVDS
  • Doc on plans soon
  • (Shava Smallen - IU CS)
  • Monitoring
  • What information is needed to monitor an Athena
job how to visualize it in portal
  • (Lisa Ensman IU Physics)
