Codec

• A codec is a device or program capable of
  encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or
  signal
• Names of Codecs coincide with the names of movie
  types
• Quicktime, Real, Windows Media

Codecs are compressors and de-compressors

• Take advantage of two properties of video
• That there are going to be solid areas of color
  within each individual frame
• That multiple frames on the timeline our going to
  be similar to eachother

Compressors/Codecs work in two basic ways

• Interframe/Temporal Compression (Takes advantage
  of like pixels in multiple frames in a sequence)
• Intraframe/Spatial Compression (Takes advantage
  of like pixels in a single frame)
