Title: CITING SOURCES

1
CITING SOURCES
  • giving credit where credit is due

2
Why do we cite sources?
  • To give credit to an author whose words or ideas
    we are borrowing.
  • To provide a path for further research.

3
In-text citations
  • YOU MUST GIVE CREDIT IF YOU HAVE
  • BORROWED A QUOTE OR IDEA FROM
  • ANOTHER, OR IF YOU HAVE PARAPHRASED
  • SOMEONE ELSES WORK.
  • PARAPHRASE changed the words, but the idea
remains the same- also known as thesaurisizing
or using a thesaurus to change the words

4
In-text citations
  • (also known as parenthetical documentation)
  • In other words- in parentheses.
  • Your in-text citations work with your
bibliography (works cited) page to identify where
any quotes or ideas borrowed from another author
    came from.
  • References in the text MUST clearly point to
    specific sources
  • in the list of works cited.
  • - MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers,
    6th ed.
