MQ-1 Predator makes maiden flight at Ali Base
These units are using the unmanned aircraft
system to track insurgents, IED placers and
support ground forces from all branches of
service and coalition forces. -- Maj. Tommy
Hoard, 46th ERS Detachment 1

We provide launch and recovery of the
Predators here, said Maj. Tommy Hoard, 46th ERS
Detachment 1 commander. We're putting aircraft
up, and they're being flown by units in the
United States. These units are using the unmanned
aircraft system to track insurgents, IED placers
and support ground forces from all branches of
service and coalition forces.  In addition
to ISR, the Predator is armed with Hellfire
missiles for possible strikes in case they catch
insurgents in the act and want to take them out
at that time.  The MQ-1 Predator has
contributed to the war effort throughout the
years. The aircraft is considered the number one
requested asset in theater because of its ability
to analyze high-value targets, provide 24/7
surveillance and conduct search and destroy
missions, all while leaving a small footprint.
The current aircraft fly several missions a
day, logging thousands of flying hours rapidly,
sometimes averaging more than 400 hours per month
during their lifespan. So, for the pilots and
controllers of the 46th ERS, getting the
opportunity to fly an aircraft straight from the
factory with no mileage, is a treat.
ALI BASE, Iraq -- The latest MQ-1 Predator
in the 46th Expeditionary Reconnaissance
Squadron's inventory flew its first mission in
support of operations conducted in theater.
Its mission is to provide intelligence,
surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) for ground
forces on the frontlines.
Tech. Sgt. Christopher Reed, 46th ERS, mans the
sensor controls for a MQ-1 Predator unmanned
aircraft system during its maiden voyage Feb. 8
at Ali Base, Iraq.
