Burnham Institute chooses Orlando South Florida
Business Journal - August 23, 2006 The Burnham
Institute for Medical Research has picked Orange
County over Port St. Lucie for its East Coast
campus to house 300 employees. State lawmakers
have approved 155 million out of the state's
200 million Innovation Incentive Fund for the
175,000-square-foot facility. The La Jolla,
Calif.-based nonprofit would have helped
diversify the St. Lucie workforce, currently
focused on residential home building. As it is,
the choice will help Orange County diversity its
economy away from service industries such as
theme parks. In the county, Burnham said it
plans to expand its capabilities in chemistry,
pharmacology and functional genomics to
complement and fortify its commitments to cancer,
degenerative diseases and infectious diseases.
The institute pointed out its Florida research
will also allow expansion into other areas such
as diabetes and obesity research.

VA hospital to go in Lake Nona Orlando Business
Journal - March 2, 2007 The Veteran's
Administration announced late Thursday that it
chose Lake Nona as the site for Orlando's planned
new 560 million VA Medical Center. Lake Nona is
one of six southeast Orlando sites considered by
the VA. Several things the VA wanted in a
site included nearby residential areas for
employees, as well as shops, restaurants and
public transportation. The VA also sought a site
located on a major road system, making it
accessible to the area's 92,000 veterans. It also
needed to be conducive to having a helipad. The
plans call for a medical campus with more than 1
million square feet, including a 134-bed
hospital, a 120-bed nursing home, a 60-bed
assisted living facility/transitional housing and
a veterans' benefits administration mini-service
center. When complete, the VA complex could
employ up to 2,000 people. The announcement comes
on the heels of Nemours Foundation's decision to
select Lake Nona for its proposed freestanding
children's hospital. The site also will be home
to the University of Central Florida's new
medical school and the Burnham Institute for
Medical Research's Florida satellite lab.
