Why an Engine Brake?
TODAYS VEHICLE CHALLENGES
THE JAKE BRAKE RETARDER SOLUTION
  • Improved aerodynamics, heavier loads and higher
speeds demand more use of the vehicle foundation
brakes. Jake Brake retarder minimizes the use of
foundation brakes and thus reduces the costs of
    brake maintenance, repairs and associated
    downtime.
  • Jake Brake retarders help the driver maintain a
safe higher average speed (or shorter trip
times). Additionally, the vehicle is down for
brake system maintenance or repairs less often.
  • Foundation brakes fade when used excessively. A
Jake Brake retarder reduces the use of foundation
brakes on downhill grades as well as level land.
Driver comfort and control translate to driver
    retention.
  • Used truck guides document that a Jake Brake
    retarder-equipped vehicle will sell for a 1000
premium. Fleets confirm that these vehicles sell
    faster.

How An Engine Brake Works
Creating a power absorbing air compressor
4-stroke with engine brake As the piston
approaches top dead center (TDC) on the
compression stroke, the exhaust valve is opened,
exhausting high pressure air. Therefore, no
energy is returned to the piston in the expansion
stroke. This net loss of energy is called engine
retarding, made possible by a compression-release
brake (or engine brake).

What an Engine Brake does Enables faster
downhill control speed
Control Speed The constant speed at which a
vehicle can descend a given grade without the use
of the vehicle foundation brakes.
80,000 lbs. 6 Grade 13-speed trans.
(Actual results may vary due to specific engine
and vehicle configuration.)

What an Engine Brake does Reduces slowing
time/distances on flat land
Example Slowing from 55 MPH to 45 MPH

10L Retarder
10.0 seconds
