The Arges County
The Arges county is situated in the
Central-Southern part of Romania.
The most part of its territory is the upper basin
of the Arges River from which it took its
name. In the mountain and hilly zone there are a
lot of natural ice lakes as well as man-made
lakes. The natural elements, valuable historic
places and modern lines of communication back the
Arges county as a tourist zone of national level.

and keeps it from the beginning till now. In the
Fagaras Mountains there is the Moldoveanu (2,534
m above sea level), the highest peak of the
Romanian Carpathians.
Transfagarasanul is the highest road in Romania
and it reaches almost 2000 m above the sea level.
It connects Muntenia and Transilvania, two
historic parts of Romania. At its top you can
find Lake Balea, a glaciar lake formes thousands
of years ago.

At about 30 km from Pitesti one can visit one of
the most oldest cities in Romania, Curtea de
Arges. It is famous for its Monastery, one of the
greatest European values and also a place were
legend is at its home. It is said that a woman
was built up in the walls of the monastary,
because only that way the monastery wouldn't fall
down.

Pitesti Pitesti, the capital of Arges county, is
located at the river Arges and river Doamnei
confluence. It's 100 km from Bucharest, the
capital of Romania. It has about 300.000 people.
Its name comes from a verb that in Romanian means
"to hide", because it's "hidden" between hills.
The oldest tracks of human existence are from
the Paleolithic age. Pitesti was first a village
and became a town at the beginning of the 14th
century.

On its territory, nearby the municipality of
Pitesti, the 45 Parallel and the 25 Meridian meet
each other.
It is also called "Tulip's town" because there
are all kinds of tulips planted and they all
blossom in spring. The city's municipality
organizes every year "The Tulip's Simphony, an
event were the beauty of flowers is completed by
music.

Pitesti is one of the most industrialized cities
in Romania. It is the center of the automotive
industry in the country (the Automobile Dacia
automaker is situated in the nearby town of
Mioveni. The city also houses an oil refinery
(Arpechim), part of the Petrom group.
