3. Country Experience Kenya Lessons Learned
31Country Experience Kenya Lessons Learned
- No addressing system without proper town planning
- Different solutions for different areas
- ? different areas can easily be
identified on aerial or satellite images
especially of high resolution (if the local
knowledge is not sufficient or the town is too
big) - ? after identifying, the areas can be
classified and different systems can be assigned
to the different areas - We need more than a simple road map
- ? we need the borders of the plots to
address them properly - ? we do not get the borders of the plots
without files of land ownership, local
knowledge, development plans or others
32Country Experience Kenya Lessons Learned
- No addressing system without proper town planning
- We need a participatory process
- We have to find a solution for problem
cases like houses on road reserves. Do we have
to demolish those houses? Are the planned roads
not important for the inhabitants of those areas? - All the described issues (which are far from
being complete) need a process of meetings,
surveys and town planning. - Development plans have to be adjusted.
- Political systems and local preferences play a
key role in developing street addressing systems,
especially in developing countries.
33Country Experience Kenya Lessons Learned
- No addressing system without proper town planning
- By introducing a GIS, we can also easily
- identify the owners, the tenants, the number of
people living there, - the use of the plot (industrial, residential),
- the status of infrastructure like water supply,
waste management, - sanitation etc.
- . and use this information for town planning
issues as well as for improving the status of our
information about our towns (file management) and
make use of this information for tax collection.
