NWS Jackson Briefings
  • Daily conference calls are initiated when a
    tropical cyclone may impact the NWS Jackson
    service area within 5 days
  • Call frequency is increased to 4 times a day when
    a hurricane watch or warning is in effect for the
    MS and/or LA coast and the storm will impact the
    service area
  • Times are 5 am, 10 am, 330 pm, and 10 pm

Extreme Wind Warning
  • Product issued to convey threat of extreme winds
    associated with the eye of a major hurricane
  • Was issued during Katrina, but then was under a
    tornado warning. Will now be its own product to
    reduce confusion.
  • Criteria is that the hurricane must still be at
    category 3 strength (sustained winds 115 mph)
  • Katrina was a high end category 2 when these
    products were issued in 2005
  • Would probably only ever be issued for our far
    southern counties/parishes (Hwy 84 and south)
