Nobel Peace Prize
Traci Newton turned her civil and mechanical
engineering degrees into success both locally and
beyond. She earned the merit award for
outstanding service to the Atomic Energy Agency
and was among a team of inspectors to share the
Nobel Peace Prize for working toward a peaceful
use of nuclear energy.

Going Global
  • UNLV opened its first international campus in
    Singapore, offering degrees through the William
    F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration. The
    new campus is located in the prestigious National
    Library of Singapore.

Smoking Bans Economic Impact
An interdisciplinary UNLV research team tracked
key economic indicators before and after the
passage of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act and
found very little negative economic impact in
Clark County.

Since being named The Next Food Network Star,
UNLV alumnus Guy Fieri has become the host of
his own shows including Guys Big Bite and
Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Hes also an author
and co-owner of five California restaurants.

  • The Black Mountain Institute fosters an
    environment where thinkers and writers from
    around the world can challenge entrenched
    perspectives on human issues. Renowned writers

    conflict resolution, right here on the UNLV

Mark of Distinction
The Business College is among the six percent of
business colleges in the world to be accredited
by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools
of Business. It is one of a few select business
schools in the world to achieve the dual
accreditation for the college in the area of
accounting.

  • The English Department is home to some of the
    nations most creative minds including a finalist
    for the Pulitzer Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship

Pre-Columbian Art
  • The Marjorie Barrick Museum houses an
    extraordinary collection of pre-Columbian and
    ethnographic art, thanks to donations of
    collectors like Dr. Michael C. and Mannetta
    Braunstein. This collection is one of the largest
    of its kind.

A Green Home Community in Las Vegas
The Center for Energy Research, in partnership
with Pulte Homes and NV Energy, received 6.9
million from the U.S. Department of Energy to
develop a community of homes that incorporate
energy-efficient features and advanced utility
metering to cut energy use by more than half.

  • Greenspun Hall on Maryland Parkway is five
    stories and 120,000 square feet of pure
    innovation. The Greenspun Family Foundation
    contributed 37 million for the projectthe
    largest single donation in UNLV history and one

Joint Skills Lab
Nursing schools from UNLV and Nevada State
College are teaming up with the University of
Nevada School of Medicine to open the
31,000-square-foot Collaborative Center for
Clinical Simulation of Las Vegas. The facility
collaboratively educates nursing students,
medical students, and medical residents.

The Lincy Foundation donated 14 million for the
proposed Lincy Institute at UNLV, which will set
a new standard for integrated problem solving by
allowing regional organizations to more
effectively address large-scale challenges in the
areas of education, health care, social systems,
and public policy.

On Top Down Under
  • Students from the William S. Boyd School of Law
    achieved top national honors in the 2007 Client
    Counseling Competition. They traveled to Sydney,
    Australia to compete internationally.

    cancer was originally deciphered by using fruit
    fly genetics. Graduate student Elana Paladino
    hopes to use her research to shed light on
    conditions associated with the development of
    coronary heart disease.

  • Former Rebel golfer Ryan Moore won his first PGA
    Tour event at the Wyndham Championship in August.
    One of the most heralded players in the golf
    program's history (2001-05), he set a new
    standard in amateur golf in 2004 by winning five
    major amateur championships, a feat that had
    never before occurred.

Parkinsons Research
  • Kinesiology researchers found that by simply
    changing their focus of attention, those living
    with Parkinsons disease could improve their
    stability and ultimately experience fewer falls.

Harder than Diamonds
  • Physics and astronomy professor Changfeng Chen
    and colleagues have identified a material
    wurtzite boron nitride that exceeds the
    hardness of diamonds and could lead to
    advancements in industrial technology.

National Steel Bridge Competition
UNLV competed with 48 top universities in May in
the National Steel Bridge Competition at the
Thomas Mack Center. Student engineering teams
were given a real-world scenario and tasked with
building a functional 1/10th scale model bridge.

A Good Investment
  • The UNLV facilities team earned the Cashman Good
    Government Award from the Nevada Taxpayers
    Association. It is the highest honor for a public
    employee or program in the state of Nevada. The
    annual award is given in recognition of
    efficient and effective use of taxpayer funds.

In 2009, the Barrick Lecture Series welcomed
political analysts Gloria Borger and E.J. Dionne
Jr., former Congressman J.C. Watts of Oklahoma,
and ABC News Chief Correspondent George

Healthcare Hero
  • The Nevada Business Journal named School of
    Nursing dean Carolyn Yucha a Healthcare Hero in
    2009. Yucha was the third consecutive
    representative from the School of Nursing to win
    the award.

Boyd School of Law
The William S. Boyd School of Law was ranked 75th
in U.S. News World Reports annual rankings of
the best law schools and specialty programs. The
schools legal writing program and Saltman Center
for Conflict Resolution were named among the top
10 specialty programs.

Fulbright Scholar
  • Ardyth Sohn, director of the School of Journalism
    and Media Studies, was named a Fulbright Scholar
    for 2009-10. She will research new and emerging
    media in Eastern Europe.

School of Dental Medicine
Since last fall, the School of Dental Medicine
has given more than 7,000 oral cancer screenings
to Nevada high school students and has treated
more than 37,000 patients who cannot afford the
cost of dental care all free of charge.

Peace In The Desert Series
In 2009, the Saltman Center for Conflict
Resolution at the William S. Boyd School of Law
welcomed NPR journalist Daniel Schorr and energy
experts Robert Litwak and Stephen Younger to its
Peace in the Desert Lecture Series.
