Read and Ask a Knowing Question
  • TOKYO - The world's oldest man celebrated his
113th birthday on Thursday, telling reporters at
his home in southern Japan about his joyful life
    and healthy appetite.
  • "I'm happy," said Tomoji Tanabe as the local
mayor presented him with flowers and a giant tea
cup glazed with his name and date of birth. "I'm
well. I eat a lot," he added.
  • Tanabe, recognized by the Guinness Book of World
Records as the oldest living male last year, eats
mostly vegetables and believes the key to
    longevity is not drinking alcohol.
  • The former civil servant lives with his son,
drinks milk every day and has no major illnesses,
although he now writes in his diary only once or
twice a month. He used to write on a daily basis.

17
Ask and Swap
18
Think Pair Share
  • Think of different ways you can use question
stems at home as you read with your children.

19
B.U.G
  • Our grade uses a B.U.G. (Bring Useful Gear)
Notebook to help us learn how to organize our
materials and stay organized throughout the year!
  • DO take home every night and return each morning
  • DO NOT take out papers in the BUG unless in
    homework/parent pocket
  • Papers in subject folder we are currently working
    on in class

Agenda
  • Main way of communication
  • Please sign agenda
  • Letter stamp is to represent that the teacher has
    seen agenda
  • Nightly Reading, Active Eagles, Math Facts need
parent initial (one initial for all 3 is fine)
  • Sign up for teacher bulletins on website

22
Active Eagles
  • Our school participates in physical education
program that promotes healthy living outside of
the school day. Students are to complete 30
minutes of activity outside the school day each
day- this can include anything from loading the
dishwasher to playing in a soccer game. Each
night parents sign beside the AE in students
agendas to verify their participation in the
program. At the end of each quarter, teachers
will collect the agenda and look at the
signatures. Students will be able to receive a
ribbon celebrating their achievement at the end
of each quarter during the quarterly Student
    Recognition Ceremony.

23
Math Facts
  • 10-20 minute practice each night
  • Sign off in the agenda
  • Students choose from Math Facts ideas list in
    their BUG.
  • Extremely important to bring students to a higher
    level of thinking in math.

24
Spellers Choice Contract
  • Students choose one activity on Monday, Tuesday,
    and Wednesday.
  • Turn in Thursday.
  • Thursday night is a practice test- parent sign in
    agenda.
  • Friday is spelling test.

25
Monday Folders
  • Required to keep a Portfolio on each student.
  • Please sign and return tests within 48 hours.
  • All other work may stay at home if it is not
    stamped Sign and Return.

26
Accelerated Reader
  • Ranges and goals are set (expect them to be lower
this quarter due to time it takes to launch the
    program).
  • Progress sent twice a quarter mid-quarter and
before the end of the quarter
  • Need to maintain an 85 average on the tests.

27
Writing Portfolio
  • We are required to keep a running writing
portfolio for each student. Therefore, it is
imperative that when you receive writing samples
at home marked Sign and Return we receive them
back. You should expect to keep the bulk of your
students writing samples by the end of the year
though (some samples must go to the fourth grade
teacher so s/he has an indication of your childs
    latest writing abilities).

28
Grading
  • Third grade is the first year that students are
graded on a 7 point scale and it is converted
into a letter grade. The scale looks like this
  • A 100 93
  • B 92 85
  • C 84 77
  • D 76 70
  • F 69 and below
  • Occasionally, it is more appropriate for students
    to receive grades indicated by a ? (100/A), ?
    (90/B), or a ?- (80/C). These will be recorded
on their papers and are an indication of minor
    grades.
  • If your student receives a C or below on an
assignment, it is encouraged that your student
correct their answers, and turn back in to their
teacher for partial of the credit back.

29
Late Assignment Policy
  • If students are missing assignments without a
letter of excuse, our late paper policy is that
the first day the assignment is missed, the paper
is graded regularly, and then dropped one grade.
If a paper was a low A, it will now be a low B.
Each day after that the assignment continues to
be late, that grade will drop two points until it
is turned in. This policy helps with grading
    fairness.

30
Projects Goals

  • Student Created, Parent Guided
