GEO1003 Spring2006 Lecture 10 (Two-Component
Phase Diagrams)
Must read ch6 (esp p96-104 in text book)!
Two-Component (Binary) Phase Diagrams

Two-Component (Binary) Phase Diagrams
Introduction
  • In last class we looked at a simple two-component
    phase diagram with complete
  • solid solution
  • In this class we will explore crystallization and
    melting in
  • three two-component diagrams (same ones in ch6 of
    textbook!)
  • Two-component with eutectic (Diopside-Anorthite
    system)
  • Two component with peritectic (Forsterite-silica
    system)
  • Two-component system with exsolution (Alkali
    feldspar system)
  • In next class we will explore effects of FC and
    partial melting on these diagrams,
  • and also introduce three-component diagrams
  • Eutectic invariant point, T minimum on liquidus
  • Peritectic invariant point, not a T minimum, to
cool further one phase must be destroyed
