In 1891, James Naismith invented basketball. He
wanted a sport that could be played indoors in
the winter.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ITS BEGINNINGS Soon after the
end of the American Civil War, around 1865,
colleges began organizing football games. In
1867, Princeton led the way in establishing some
rudimentary rules of the game. Also in that year,
the football itself was patented for the very
first time.
  • The Cuban Giants, formed the first
    all-black professional baseball team in 1885. The
    name was adopted because Latino players were more
    commonly accepted than blacks at that time.
