Almost one third of Finnish territory has been
covered by mires in past, proposition has been
greatest in Pohjanmaa and Forest Lapland area.
In Lake Finland lakes substitute mires. Some
mires are clear mire areas, and some form mosaic
pattern with forests.

• Peat mining areas are clearly visible in Google
  earth images

Natural mire forest mosaic pattern in
Suomenselkä area (in Middle Finland) in 1955.
Forest are green, mires are white and lakes are
blue. Forest covered moraine ridges are in NW
SE position

Same area in 1995. Drainage for forestry (red),
agriculture (yellow ) and peat mining (black)
have destroyed most mires of area. At the same
most landscape is now forest covered. Thanks to
Nature protection there is also intact mires left.
