Title: The Effectiveness of Traffic Sign Detection and Recognition

1
The Effectiveness of Traffic Sign Detection and
Recognition
  • INFSCI 2300
  • Human Information Processing
  • Yi-Chi Lin

2
Human Visual System
  • Bottom-up processing (data-driven)
  • what we see is determined by the external
    stimulation
  • Top-down processing (conception-driven)
  • our expectation helps to interpret the incomplete
    input
  • Context effect
  • object recognition is meaningful, not just based
    on single information

3
Human Visual System
  • See an Object
  • Propose a hypothesis
  • Match Features
  • Matched ? human visual system will find more
    proof to support this hypothesis
  • Not matched ? human visual system will modify the
hypothesis and seek for proof to verify it

Traffic Sign Recognition Flow

Traffic Sign Features
  • Color Cue
  • Red signs mean stop or use caution.
  • Yellow signs with black lettering are used to
warn you that you are coming to a hazardous area
or an area with special rules.
  • Orange signs with black lettering are used in
areas where there is road construction.
  • Green signals mean go. Green signs with white
lettering show the directions and distances to
    different places.
  • Blue signs show information, like the route to a
hospital or where camping is available.
  • Shape Cue
  • Triangle, Circle, Rectangle, Octagon, Diamond
  • Inner Icon
  • Graph or Letters Based on personal knowledge
    stored in memory

6
Traffic Sign Detection
  • The detection of colors, graphs and words will be
affected by the sight of light (night time, too
    much sun)
  • Shape
  • no vertices vertices
    vertices vertices
  • vertex on 2, 4, 6, 8 on the
    lines on 2, 7, 9 on 1, 3, 7, 9

7
Conclusion
  • In the great-vision condition, the effective way
to recognize the traffic sign is determining the
    graphs or reading the words.
  • In the condition with interference (ex. bad
weather), the most effective way is determining
the shape, and then combining with the color and
    graph meaning.
