The Breadbasket Colonies

• The Colonies in The Middle Atlantic Region were
  supported by farming wheat.

Colonial Philadelphia

• William Penn
• Founded Philly on the idea that people with
  differences could get along (Brotherly Love)
• Designed Philly with Checkerboard plan for the
  Center
• Divided the Colony up into Townships of 5,000
  Acres each
• Planned the Government and the settlements of
  Pennsylvania

• Ben Franklin
• Printed out a newspaper called the Pennsylvania
  Gazette
• Organized the first firefighting company in the
  colonies
• Worked to have the streets paved and lit at
  night.
• Invented the lightning rod which helps protect
  buildings from lightning.

Moving West

• As life in the colonial cities became more and
  more crowded people began to move to the frontier
  where land was usually very cheap and available
  to be bought and sold.
• People that lived on the frontier had a very
  tough lifestyle. Everyone had to work and
  families had to be self sufficient.
