Sources of rivers
  • The start of a river is called a source and
they can come from anywhere such as rocks or
    soil.
  • Bogs

Movement of a river
  • Rivers move in many different ways.

9
Rapids
  • Rapids are parts of a river that move very fast
and have a very strong current. If anything tried
to stand up in them they would get swept off
their feet and would probably go under the water
and drown. At the rapids, the river is shallow
and flowing very quickly over rocks, boulders and
stones poking out above the water level.

10
Waterfalls
  • Waterfalls are formed when water cannot pass
through rocks so it goes straight over the top of
it. This is a picture of Niagara falls in America.

Oxbows
  • An oxbow is a narrow necked loop of a river.
Oxbow lakes are oxbows that have been abandoned
by a river but still contain water. Below are the
    stages of an oxbow.

13
Meanders
  • A meander is a bend in a river. Meanders normally
occur in the middle and lower courses of a river
where the water moves more slowly. The river
    carves out s-shaped bends.

14
Deltas
  • Deltas are areas of flat land that form at a
rivers mouth or in a lake.

15
Estuaries
  • An estuary is a river mouth that does not contain
    a delta
