Title: Cooper Farms Internship

1
  • Cooper Farms Internship
  • 6/21/04 - 9/10/04
  • by
  • Kimberly Kroesen

2
Cooper Farms- Then
  • Virgil and Virgina started the turkey business in
    1938.
  • Local hatcheries supplied poults.
  • Turkeys put out on range.
  • In the early forties 10,000 turkeys were raised
    to market each year.

3
Cooper Farms- Today
  • Four Divisions of the Company
  • 1. Hatchery and Breeder (Oakwood, Ohio)
  • 2. Feed and Animal (Fort Recovery,
    Ohio)
  • 3. Processing (St. Henry,
    Ohio)
  • 4. Cooked Meats (Van Wert, Ohio)

4
Where I was at Breeder and Hatchery Division
  • Two Hatcheries
  • Starter Barns
  • Grow-out Barns
  • Stud Farms
  • Breeder Farms
  • Sow Farms

5
Summer Projects
  • Egg Uniformity Study
  • I weighed 500 eggs from each breeder farm.
  • Many calcualations and a report were made on the
    data gathered.
  • This study is done frequently and records are
    kept.

6
Summer Projects
  • Poult Uniformity Study
  • 300 poults were weighed from each flock.
  • Many calculations were performed and a report was
    made of the data collected.
  • This study is done frequently and records are
    kept.

7
Summer Projects
  • Cracked Egg Study
  • I went to different breeder farms and observed
the birds to see how many cracked floor eggs they
    were eating.
  • With this information you can estimate how many
eggs are lost in a day, week, or season.
  • The company can try different types of nests to
lower the number of cracked eggs.

8
Summer Projects
  • Water Testing
  • At each farm I tested the first and last waterer
in each barn, the egg house if there was one, and
    the pond.
  • I tested for chlorine, pH, and found the
    Oxidation Reduction Potential.

9
What I Learned
  • Interesting Fact
  • Turkey toms start strutting as early as 10 days
    old!

10
What I learned
  • There are strict Biosecurity rules the company
    follows to ensure healthy flocks.
  • Shower in and out of each farm (clothes given to
    you).
  • All vehicles hosed off.
  • Younger birds must be visited before older birds.

11
What I learned
  • I learned how to pull blood from a turkey.
  • Blood tests are done on each flock.
  • They check titer levels.
  • They can check for certain diseases such as Avian
    Influenza.

12
What I learned
  • Interesting Fact
  • These incubators can hold over 9,000 eggs at a
    time!

13
What I learned
  • I learned how to set up a pen for day-old poults.
  • Cardboard pen.
  • Floor feeders.
  • Mini-waterers and
  • large waterers.
  • Heat and light.

14
What I learned
  • I learned how to put together automatic nests.
  • Coopers only has one more conentional farm left
which is in the process of being switched over.
  • The nests are being widened because birds are
    getting larger.

15
How an Automatic Nest Works
  • 1. The hen goes into the
  • nest when she is ready to
  • lay an egg.
  • 2. The nests are on timers
  • to remove the birds and
  • collct the eggs.
  • Peak laying period is between 11 am and 2 pm.

16
How an Automatic Nest Works
  • 3. When the nests go off
  • they slowly push the hens
  • out and roll the eggs onto
  • the belt.

17
How an Automatic Nest Works
  • 4. The belts take the
  • eggs to the front of
  • the barn.

18
How an Automatic Nest Works
  • 5. People gather and
  • sort eggs by size and
  • shape. All the unusable
  • eggs are recorded.

19
How to do a Paravitaline Test
  • Cut the germinal disc from the yolk.

20
How to do a Paravitaline Test
  • Put it on a slide and add dye.

21
How to do a Paravitaline Test
  • Under a Microscope you can see white spots where
the sperm tried to fertilize the egg. The more
spots the better. They use this test to check
fertility and to grade new inseminators.
