Environmental Education in School System
  • A sub-component of the World Bank supported
    project under India Environment Management
    Capacity Building project undertaken by the
    Ministry of Environment and Forests.
  • Centre for Environment Education is assisting the
    MoEF in implementing this.

Phase I
  • Involved a detailed study of textbooks of all the
    states, to analyse environmental content in
    these.
  • Also involved a sample study looking at classroom
    transaction of environmental content of
    textbooks.
  • A National Consultation involving a wide
    cross-section of stakeholders discussed how to
    strengthen EE in Schools.

From Phase I
  • Based on the studies and processes of Phase I,
    Phase II will take up pilot implementation of
    efforts to strengthen EE in schools in eight
    selected states.
  • The pilot implementation will be in Standards 6,
    7 and 8.

Phase II
  • MOUs have been signed between the State
    Departments of Education of these states and the
    Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of
    India.
  • The selected states are
  • Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir,
    Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab and Uttaranchal

Phase II Guiding Principles
  • The guiding principles for Phase II are
  • - environment should not be a separate subject
  • - introduction of environmental concepts should
    not constitute any perceptible additionality of
    hours
  • - practical, hands-on activities, field
    experiences, work experience etc. are important
    components of EE

Phase II Major Thrusts
  • Within these parameters, this phase includes
  • bringing in four major components in each of the

  • selected states
  • Strengthening Infusion of Environmental content
    into textbooks
  • Creating a separate time and space for
    environment
  • Teacher Training
  • Use of non-formal methods through the involvement
    of NGOs

Phase II-Work Plan-Part I
  • Selection of states
  • Signing of MOUs
  • Re-doing textbooks of Science, Social Science,
    and languages for each state
  • Selection of 100 schools per state
  • Developing other EE programmes and material for
    teachers, students.
  • Training master trainers and teachers
  • Orienting and involving various stakeholders.

Phase II-Work Plan-Part 2
  • Ongoing, yearlong implementation in about 100
    schools in each state
  • Refresher training
  • Annual events
  • Process documentation, monitoring, evaluation
  • Initiatives towards mainstreaming and scaling up
    in the state

Phase II-Work Plan-Part 3
  • Sharing research results through workshops,
    publications, etc.
  • The project also envisages some capacity building
    for key persons at state and central level.

Strengthening Infusion Process
  • The first step towards strengthening infusion of
    EE in textbooks was to arrive at a core list of
    concepts for inclusion in the textbooks. This was
    done at a workshop in September

  • Following this, approaches for greening
    textbooks for the various subjects have been
    developed.
  • Model chapters have been developed.

  • At a central workshop involving the selected
    states, these approaches and sample chapters were
    presented.
  • The process for greening state textbooks was
    discussed and finalized.
  • Frameworks for selected chapters were developed,
    and sample chapters developed.

Strengthening Infusion (4)
  • States will now be working through their own
    processes to developed drafts of greened
    textbooks.
  • CEE will develop certain standard write-ups,
    boxes, case studies, chapters, visuals etc. which
    states could use.
