  • A noun is a word that names a person, place,
    thing, or idea.

Common Nouns
  • A common noun names ANY person, place, thing, or
    idea.
  • student, teacher, player, friend
  • A proper noun names a PARTICULAR person, place,
    thing or idea.
  • Mrs. Zoda, Samuel, Chicago, Europe
  • Proper nouns are ALWAYS capitalized.

  • Concrete nouns are things or people you can see
    or touch.
  • Table, book, friend, hamburger

  • time, courage, bravery, education, honesty
  • These nouns can have symbols that represent them
    but they are unseen and intangible.
  • Example A clock can represent time, but time
    itself is unseen.

  • Example foot ball football
  • Both a foot and a ball are nouns. Together they
    form a compound noun.
  • Compound nouns can be one word, more than one
    word, or hyphenated words.
  • Examples housekeeper (one word)
  • Post office, maid of honor, high school
  • (two words but one place or thing)
  • Sister-in-law, great-aunt, walkie-talkie
  • (hyphenated words)
