What is a Noun?
  • A noun is word that labels a person, place,
    thing, or idea
  • Examples
  • People teacher, student, boy, girl, mom, dad,
    doctor, coach, neighbor
  • Places city, state, school, house, outside,
    woods, lake, street, kitchen, Maple Street
  • Things paper, flowers, hamburger, bicycle,
    computer
  • Ideas freedom, peace, loyalty, creativity

Proper and Common Nouns
  • A noun will either be PROPER or COMMON
  • A proper noun gives a specific name or title of a
    person, place, thing, or idea. Therefore, a
    proper noun needs a capital letter. Example
    Queen Elizabeth
  • A common noun gives a general label for a person,
    place, thing, or idea and should not be
    capitalized. Example woman

Concrete and Abstract Nouns
  • Not all nouns can be seen or touched. These are
    called abstract nouns. Abstract nouns often
    label ideas or emotions. Nouns that you can see
    or touch are called concrete nouns.
  • Here are some examples
  • Concrete Nouns people, trees, desks, buildings,
    animals, books, games, food
  • Abstract Nouns peace, anger, freedom, honesty,
    appreciation, fear, sorrow, loyalty, pride

TIPS
  • In order to identify nouns, ask yourself these
    questions
  • Is it a person or an animal?
  • Is it a place?
  • Is it an object that I can see or touch?
  • Is it something that I can have, experience, or
    believe in, even if I cant see it? (Can I have
    happiness? Yes! Can I have happy? No!)
