Title: Understanding Our Genetic Code

1
Understanding Our Genetic Code
  • Evangelism and Discipleship

2
Evangelism
  • And He said to them, "Go into all the world and
preach the gospel to all creation.
  • Mark 1615

3
  • "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached
in the whole world for a witness to all the
nations, and then the end shall come.
  • Matthew 2414

4
I. What is the Gospel?
  • The word gospel comes from the Greek word
    Euaggeliun pronounced (yoo-ang-ghel-eeon)
  • It means a good or joyful message
  •
  • Websters 1828 dictionary defines it as
  • The history of the birth, life, actions, death,
doctrines, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus
Christ a revelation of the grace of God to
    fallen man through a mediator.
  •

5
  • For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the
power of God for salvation to everyone who
believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
  • Romans 116

6
  • The gospel or good news has miraculous power for
salvation for everyone who believes. Salvation
is not just going to heaven, but also means to
rescue, deliver, make whole, heal, and restore.
  • This is the heart of the whole or Full-Gospel
message. God wants to heal you in spirit, soul
and body! Why would anyone be ashamed or
disappointed in something so awesome and so
    life-changing as the gospel?

7
II. What does it mean to Preach the Gospel?
  • Noah Webster defined it as
  • To pronounce a public discourse on a religious
subject, or from a text of scripture.
  • To discourse on the gospel of salvation and
exhort to repentance to discourse on evangelical
truths and exhort to a belief of them and
acceptance of the terms of salvation. This was
the extemporaneous manner of preaching pursued by
    Christ and his disciples.

8
It is translated from the Greek word-Kerusso
(Kau-roos-so)
  • 1) to be a herald, to officiate as a herald
  • a) to proclaim after the manner of a herald
  • b) always with the suggestion of formality,
gravity and an authority which must be listened
    to and obeyed
  • 2) to publish, to proclaim openly something
    which has been done
  • 3) used of the public proclamation of the gospel
and matters pertaining to it, made by John the
Baptist, by Jesus, by the apostles and other
    Christian teachers

9
  • Preaching the gospel is the main avenue of
evangelism taught and demonstrated by Jesus and
his disciples, but it is the least used method in
    all of Christianity.
  • We tend to trust in church services, Christian
radio, Christian TV, Christian books, and
Christian movies and concerts to reach the
masses, but forget that 99 of those listening
    are Christians.
  • Preaching the gospel confronts the lost in
greater numbers and much more cheaply than any of
these methods, and demonstrates a radical
Christian life. We want to do all that we can to
get the good news out, but lets not forget the
method Jesus used-Preaching the Gospel of the
    Kingdom!

10
III. Examples of Preaching in the Old Testament
  • Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts her voice
in the square at the head of the noisy streets
she cries out at the entrance of the gates in
the city, she utters her sayings "How long, O
naive ones, will you love simplicity? And
scoffers delight themselves in scoffing, and
fools hate knowledge? "Turn to my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit on you I will
make my words known to you. Prov. 120-23

11
  • Most of the Old Testament preaching took place in
the gates of the city. Most cities were walled
off to protect against attack. So all travel
would come and go through these gates. The bible
also shows that business was done in the gates
and court was held and decisions broadcast at the
    gates.
  • Public meetings, peace negotiations, and
executions were held at gates. The religious
leaders as well as beggars hung out at the gates
of the city. This was where people congregated,
so this is where the prophets preached! Where
    are todays preachers?

12
  • Does not wisdom call, and understanding lift up
her voice? On top of the heights beside the way,
where the paths meet, she takes her stand
beside the gates, at the opening to the city, at
the entrance of the doors, she cries out
  • "To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the
sons of men. "O naive ones, discern prudence
and, O fools, discern wisdom. "Listen, for I
shall speak noble things and the opening of my
lips will produce right things. "For my mouth
will utter truth and wickedness is an
    abomination to my lips.
  • Proverbs. 81-7

13
Jotham
  • And all the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo
assembled together, and they went and made
Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar which
    was in Shechem.
  • Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on
the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice
and called out. Thus he said to them, "Listen to
me, O men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
  • Judges 96-7

14
Isaiah
  • "Cry loudly, do not hold back raise your voice
like a trumpet, and declare to My people their
transgression, and to the house of Jacob their
    sins.
  • Isaiah 581

15
Jeremiah
  • The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD,
saying, "Stand in the gate of the LORD'S house
and proclaim there this word, and say, 'Hear the
word of the LORD, all you of Judah, who enter by
these gates to worship the LORD!'"
  • Jeremiah 71-2

16
  • And the LORD said to me, "Proclaim all these
words in the cities of Judah and in the streets
of Jerusalem, saying, 'Hear the words of this
    covenant and do them.
  • Jeremiah 116

17
  • Thus the LORD said to me, "Go and stand in the
public gate, through which the kings of Judah
come in and go out, as well as in all the gates
of Jerusalem and say to them, 'Listen to the
word of the LORD, kings of Judah, and all Judah,
and all inhabitants of Jerusalem, who come in
    through these gates Jeremiah 1719-20

18
Amos
  • They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they
abhor him who speaks with integrity.
  • Amos 510

19
Jonah
  • "Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim
to it the proclamation which I am going to tell
    you."
  • So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to
the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an
exceedingly great city, a three days' walk. Then
Jonah began to go through the city one day's
walk and he cried out and said, "Yet forty days
    and Nineveh will be overthrown."
  • Then the people of Nineveh believed in God and
they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the
greatest to the least of them.
  • Jonah 32-5

20
IV. Examples of Preaching in the New Testament
  • Now in those days John the Baptist came,
preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
  • For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the
prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the
wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, make
    His paths straight!'"
  • Matthew 31-3

21
Jesus Preached!
  • From that time Jesus began to preach and say,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
  • Matthew 417

22
  • And Jesus was going about in all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the
gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of
disease and every kind of sickness among the
    people.
  • Matthew 423

23
  • And Jesus was going about all the cities and the
villages, teaching in their synagogues, and
proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and
healing every kind of disease and every kind of
    sickness.
  • Matthew 935

24
  • And it came about that when Jesus had finished
giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He
departed from there to teach and preach in their
    cities.
  • Matthew 111

25
  • And He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else to
the towns nearby, in order that I may preach
there also for that is what I came out for.
  • And He went into their synagogues throughout all
Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.
  • Mark 138-39

26
  • "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He
anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor.
  • He has sent me to proclaim release to the
captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to
set free those who are downtrodden,
  • To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord."
  • Luke 418-19

27
  • And it came about soon afterwards, that He
began going about from one city and village to
another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of
God and the twelve were with Him,
  • Luke 81

28
Jesus Teaches Disciples to Preach
  • "And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of
    heaven is at hand.'
  • Matthew 107

29
  • "What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the
light and what you hear whispered in your
    ear, proclaim upon the housetops.
  • Matthew 1027

and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
  • Matthew 1241
  •

31
  • "And He ordered us to preach to the people, and
solemnly to testify that this is the One who has
been appointed by God as Judge of the living and
    the dead.
  • Acts 1042

32
Jesus Sends Disciples Out to Preach
  • Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with
Him and that He might send them out to preach,
and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast
    out demons
  • Mark 314-15 (NKJ)

33
  • And He called the twelve together, and gave them
power and authority over all the demons, and to
heal diseases. And He sent them out to proclaim
the kingdom of God, and to perform healing.

36
The Disciples Preach!
  • And they went out and preached that men should
    repent.
  • Mark 612 (NAS)

37
  • And they went out and preached everywhere, while
the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word
    by the signs that followed.
  • And they promptly reported all these instructions
    to Peter and his companions.
  • And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through
them from east to west the sacred and
    imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
  • Mark 1620

38
  • And departing, they began going about among the
villages, preaching the gospel, and healing
    everywhere.
  • Luke 96

39
  • But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven,
raised his voice and declared to them "Men of
Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem, let
this be known to you, and give heed to my words.
  • Acts 214

40
  • And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each
of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • "For the promise is for you and your children,
and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord
our God shall call to Himself."
  • And with many other words he solemnly testified
and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved
    from this perverse generation!
  • Acts 238-40

41
  • Therefore, those who had been scattered went
about preaching the word. And Philip went down
to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming
    Christ to them.
  • And the multitudes with one accord were giving
attention to what was said by Philip, as they
heard and saw the signs which he was performing.
  • For in the case of many who had unclean
spirits, they were coming out of them shouting
with a loud voice and many who had been
    paralyzed and lame were healed.
  • Acts 84-7

42
  • So then those who were scattered because of the
persecution that arose in connection with Stephen
made their way to Phoenicia and Cyprus and
Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to
    Jews alone.
  • But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and
Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking
to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.
  • Acts 1119-20

43
Paul Preaches
  • Acts 920 immediately Paul began to proclaim
Jesus in the synagogues, saying, "He is the Son
    of God."
  • Acts 1535 But Paul and Barnabas stayed in
Antioch, teaching and preaching, with many others
also, the word of the Lord.

44
  • Acts 1717 So Paul was reasoning in the synagogue
with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and
in the market place every day with those who
    happened to be present.

45
  • "But I do not consider my life of any account as
dear to myself, in order that I may finish my
course, and the ministry which I received from
the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel
    of the grace of God.
  • "And now, behold, I know that all of you, among
whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will see
my face no more. "Therefore I testify to you
this day, that I am innocent of the blood of all
men. "For I did not shrink from declaring to
you the whole purpose of God.
  • Acts 2024-27

46
  • And he stayed two full years in his own rented
quarters, and was welcoming all who came to him,
preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching
concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all
    openness, unhindered.
  • Acts 2830-31

47
  • But what does it say? "The word is near you, in
your mouth and in your heart"-- that is, the word
of faith which we are preaching
  • Romans 108

48
  • For since in the wisdom of God the world through
its wisdom did not come to know God, God was
well-pleased through the foolishness of the
message preached to save those who believe.
  • For indeed Jews ask for signs, and Greeks search
for wisdom but we preach Christ crucified, to
Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles
    foolishness
  • 1 Corinthians 121

49
  • And my message and my preaching were not in
persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration
of the Spirit and of power,
  • 1 Corinthians 24

50
  • Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and
    so you believed.
  • 1 Corinthians 1511

51
  • 2 Corinthians 45 For we do not preach ourselves
but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your
    bond-servants for Jesus' sake.
  •
  • Colossians 128 And we proclaim Him, admonishing
every man and teaching every man with all wisdom,
that we may present every man complete in Christ.

52
  • 1Thessalonians 29 For you recall, brethren, our
labor and hardship, how working night and day
so as not to be a burden to any of you, we
proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

53
  • 2 Timothy 417 But the Lord stood with me, and
strengthened me, in order that through me the
proclamation might be fully accomplished, and
that all the Gentiles might hear and I was
delivered out of the lion's mouth.

54
We Must Preach!
  • Romans 1015 And how shall they preach unless
they are sent? Just as it is written, "How
beautiful are the feet of those who bring glad
    tidings of good things!"

55
  • preach the word be ready in season and out of
season reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great
    patience and instruction.
  • 2 Timothy 42

56
V. Three Keys to Successful Evangelism
  • For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of
power and of love and of a sound mind.
  • 2 Timothy 17

57
  • 1. God has given us power and the authority to
    destroy fear, sickness, and demons!
  • but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you and you shall be My witnesses
both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and even to the remotest part of the earth.
  • Acts 18

58
Power
  • The word power is translated from the Greek word
    dunamis (doo'-nam-is)
  • it means force or specifically miraculous power!
Its the same word we get dynamite from.

59
Authority
  • And having summoned His twelve disciples, He gave
them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them
out, and to heal every kind of disease and every
    kind of sickness.
  • Matthew 101

60
Authority
  • The word translated authority comes from the
    Greek word exousia (ex-oo-see'-ah)
  • it means more priviledge, or delegated influence.
We have authority because of who we are in
    Christ.

61
Power and Authority
  • And He called the twelve together, and gave them
power and authority over all the demons, and to
    heal diseases.
  • Luke 91

62
  • 2. God has given us Love which defeats fear and
prepares hearts to receive the word of God.

63
  • 1 Corinthians 131-8 If I speak with the tongues
of men and of angels, but do not have love, I
have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
  • And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know
all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have
all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not
    have love, I am nothing.

64
  • And if I give all my possessions to feed the
poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but
do not have love, it profits me nothing.
  • Love is patient, love is kind, is not jealous
love does not brag and is not arrogant, does
not act unbecomingly it does not seek its own,
is not provoked, does not take into account a
wrong suffered, does not rejoice in
unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all
    things, endures all things.
  • Love never fails!

65
  • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
    patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
    gentleness, self-control against such things
    there is no law.
  • Gal 522-23

66
  • 3. We have been given a sound mind or discipline
    and self-control.
  • For, "Who can know the Lord's thoughts? Who knows
    enough to teach him?"
  • But we understand these things, for we have the
    mind of Christ.
  • 1 Cor 216 NLT

67
  • Be diligent to present yourself approved to God
as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,
handling accurately the word of truth.
  • 2 Timothy 215

68
  • but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts,
always being ready to make a defense to
everyone who asks you to give an account for the
hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and
    reverence
  • 1 Peter 315

69
Matt 1623-27
  • 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind
Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me for
you are not setting your mind on God's interests,
    but man's."

70
  • 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone
wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself,
and take up his cross and follow Me.
  • 25 "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose
it but whoever loses his life for My sake will
    find it.
  • 26 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the
whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a
man give in exchange for his soul?
  • 27 "For the Son of Man is going to come in the
glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL
THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.
