ESOHead, VO Systems Department, DMD AVO
Science Manager

The ESO archive VO challenges
  • Ground-based calibrations/observing conditions
    changing on a nightly basis
  • Varied 20 different instruments, ranging from
imagers and spectrographs to polarizers and
    interferometers
  • Evolving 2nd generation VLT instruments coming
  • Large currently 10 Tb (compressed), expected
growth x 100 in the next 8 years

6
Our Plans
  • New VO Systems department created in the
Data Management Operations Division (DMD) on
Nov. 1 to formalize ESO VO work. Its tasks
  • make the ESO archive into a real scientific
resource for the ESO community by
  • creating, ingesting, and publishing Advanced
Data Products (ADP) science ready, level 3
  • making the archive VO-compliant provide access
    via VO standards and tools
  • develop VO technology, standards, and tools via
    participation to the VO-Tech project
  • develop the VO Facility Centre

Our immediate objectives
  • Deliver a new science-oriented archive interface
by April 1, 2005, when the ESO archive opens to
the world (final decision by ESO Council Dec. 7 -
    8) ? be ready for
    non-ESO users
  • Evaluate ESO pipelines and EIS system, assess
priorities for the creation of ESO ADP, and start
producing them (likely choices WFI 4 of the
    Southern sky and UVES)
  • Prepare guidelines to receive ADP from the ESO
community (required for Large Programs as of P.
    75) ? use GOODS and EIS ESO ADP as real-life
    example
  • Get involved with the VO-Tech project and lead
our main task, New User Tools

The ST-ECF HST archive (A. Micol)
  • Aim Increase HST/ESO Scientific Archive
    Usability
  • How
  • Science-friendly user interfaces
  • Enhanced data products
  • Enhanced description/characterisation of
  • Data Products (metadata)
  • Scientific contents of Data Products
  • Interoperability

11
The ST-ECF HST archive (A. Micol)
  • Hubble Space Telescope Science Archive (4TB
    compressed)
  • Reduced Products
  • On-The-Fly Recalibration (since 1995), best
    software and reference files
  • FOS enhanced calibration (physical modelling)
  • Enhanced Products (in collab. with CADC and
    STScI)
  • WFPC2 associations, deep clean products. New
    version soon.
  • ACS associations (in the making)
  • GOODS/ESO Archive
  • Data management User Interfaces

12
The ST-ECF HST archive (A. Micol)
  • VO activities
  • AstroVirTel (AVO Precursor 2000-2003)
  • User requirements for both the ECF/ESO Archive
    and the VO
  • Various published results and achievements, e.g.,
    Querator a
  • multi-instrument multi-wavelength search engine.
  • VO Development making the HST (and ESO) archive
    VO compliant
  • Instrumental Characteristics Database,
    IDHA/SSAP/SIAP, VOQuerator, etc.
