gentry. The curriculum included such subjects as
rhetoric, dialectic, music, Latin, Greek and
classical culture.

rise to the establishment of new schools not only
in the cities but also on estates. At this time
also the first school of higher education was set
up by Abraomas Kulvietis, one of the best

  • In 1579 in accordance with the priviledge granted
by King Stephan Bathory, The University of
Vilnius was established. It was closed in 1832.

authoritative institutions of higher education
throughout East and Central Europe.

  • During the period between the two world wars,
Lithuanias education was concentrated in Kaunas,
where a university and several other higher
    learning institutions were established.

Meanwhile, in Polish occupied Vilnius, the old
university was revived and named after Stephan
Bathory.
6
  • During the years of the Soviet occupation
(1940-1990) Lithuania had a strictly centralized
educational system (ruled by the Moscow
    authorities). Learning Russian was compulsory,
but secondary and higher education were available
in Lithuanian, as well as numerous cultural
    activities. Though dominated by communist
ideology, the system had a positive influence on
the development of the network of schools.
