The CDR
  • What is it?
  • The Centralized Data Repository
  • (or CDR) is an online data sharing project
  • that houses e-waste collection statistics
    provided by
  • various collection programs across the United
    States.
  • ? www.electronicsrecycling.org/cdr
  • ? Addresses need for central clearinghouse on the
  • collection and recycling of electronic waste
  • ? In particular, it highlights pounds and units
    collected
  • across many different U.S. programs
  • ?Allows you to view some data in report format

5

Have data to submit or know someone who
does?Were Interested!
?Visit www.electronicsrecycling.org/cdr ?Sign up
for an account ?Have your data ready ?Critical
data collection location(s), collection date(s),
lbs/units collected, product scope and costs
10
What are the benefits of sharing your data?
  • ? Local Govts Private Collectors
  • This database will help you evaluate your options
  • for establishing used electronics collection
    programs, learn from
  • colleagues, and help you measure your programs
    success.
  • ? Recyclers
  • By submitting your data, your company can gain
    national visibility,
  • evaluate potential business opportunities, and
    contribute to the
  • development of the electronics recycling industry
    as a whole.
  • ? Stakeholders Interested in Electronics
    Recycling Policy
  • Local, state, and the federal government are
    considering how to handle
  • the challenges of recycling used electronics.
    Effective policies must be
  • Based on a reliable data.

11
How will the data be used?
  • ? One of the main objectives of this
  • effort will be the establishment of an updated
  • baseline for national electronics
    collection/recycling data
  • and measurement of progress for volumes of
    end-of-life
  • electronics collected and recycled.
  • ? Anyone can decide how the data will be used. It
    can be
  • used to review your options for electronics
    recycling
  • programs, evaluate costs for similar communities
    across the
  • US, and evaluate lessons learned from others.

12
Is the site user-friendly?
  • Previous feedback from users as well as
  • our own internal testing led us to discover some
  • elements of the site in need of addressing
  • ?Our new web design will make entering data
    easier!
  • ?Visual/Navigational Improvements
  • ?More User-Friendly Log-in Data Entry
  • ?Allows Recycler Data Cell Phone Data
  • ?Separates State-Mandated Programs (CA, ME)
  • ?Site still under construction and will go live
    by end of May 07
  • ?Your Comments Are Welcome!

More about the ncers online data sharing
projects!
15
The BDMS
  • What is it?
  • The Brand Data Management System
  • is an online, publicly accessible data sharing
    project
  • of brand return shares and data on state-mandated
    programs
  • ? Currently 1,925 brands represented of monitors,
TVs, desktops, laptops, and portable DVD
  • ? Shows brands and their common misspellings
  • ? Two main types of data
  • Quantities (units/weight) returned of each brand
    in various locations
  • Manufacturers claiming/registering each brand in
    state mandated programs, if available

16
BDMS Reports
The BDMS has several reporting options ?
Compare brand return share across all studies
by product type (i.e., monitor) OR across all
product types ? Determine an average return
share for each brand across all studies and
product types ? You can determine manufacturer
return share (combination of claimed brands in
various states) ? Each brands registration or
claim status in each relevant state programs
using return share for billing purposes
currently MD, ME, and WA.
17
ReturnShare
  • Definitions vary usually a brand or
manufacturers portion of the collected covered
    electronic devices
  • Determined by two methods
  • Count and record every unit return (Maine
    approach)
  • Statistically valid sampling taken (Washington
    approach)
  • Data in BDMS based on actual counts from pilots
    and Maine
  • Important because it determines how much each
manufacturer pays for recycling system costs in
    ME and WA.

18
SAMPLE
report
This report shows that RCA has a total return
share of 8.94
19
SAMPLE
report
This report shows Dells return share and claim
status across WA, ME and MD

  • What other data
  • projects are
  • on the horizon
  • AT The NCER?

21
Per CapitaCollection Index
  • What is it?
  • It is an index that measures changes in the
amount of used electronic equipment collected in
    ongoing electronics recycling programs
  • The Index is Based on Data From 6 Programs
  • ? 3 statewide programs (CA, ME, DE)
  • ? 1 large population local programs (Hennepin
    County, MN)
  • ? 2 small population local programs (Branford, CT
    Kane County, IL)

22
Per CapitaCollection Index
  • The index will be updated annually
  • to include
  • ? Annual pounds collected per capita to one
    decimal place (e.g., 2.4 lbs./capita)
  • ? Any new program data
  • ? Product scope and covered entities not
normalized, but will be adjusted if programs
    change
  • Based on most recent data 2006 index is XXX

23
  • Are we monitoring data associated with the
    mandatory state programs?

24
  • YES!

Pounds collected per capita wont be available
until 2010 after program start in 2009
29
Conclusion
  • All these data elements form pieces
  • needed for national infrastructure
  • How much is being collected
  • Which brands come back in what quantities, and
    who claims them?
  • How many orphans are there?
  • How much does a mandated program cost and how
    much does it collect?
  • Are there other key questions? LET US KNOW!
