The House System

What Is it?
  • The House System is an ongoing and consistent
    reward system to encourage the development of
    positive and well rounded contributing members of
    a school community.
  • Points are accumulated over your entire high
    school career. (in other words 5 years!)
  • The House System
  • Encourages school responsibility and involvement
  • Builds school spirit and school pride and
    self-esteem
  • Rewards and recognize outstanding school
    contributions
  • Recognizes and values all aspects of school life
    Citizenship / Academic and Athletics

Two ways to earn points
  • You can earn points for yourself
  • By doing well in your courses
  • by participating in athletic events teams
    intramurals
  • by being a positive and contributing citizen in
    your school community
  • You can earn points for your team
  • By participating in team activities
  • By showing up to these team activities with your
    house t-shirt
  • By earning points as individually they will
    also count towards the total team points

WHOS HOUSE?
  • STUDENTS ARE PICKED RANDOMLY
  • STUDENTS ARE PLACED IN A HOUSE UPON ENTRY INTO
    HIGHSCHOOL (PREP YEAR) AND REMAIN IN THAT HOUSE
    UNTIL THE END OF THEIR HIGHSCHOOL CAREER
  • AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE HOUSES ARE EQUAL BY GRADE
    AND BY GENDER
  • STAFF ARE INVOVLED IN THE HOUSE SYSTEM AS SUPPORT
    TO STUDENTS AND PROGRAM (IE COACH / RUNNING A
    CLUB/ ADVISOR FOR SP)

    community

Athletic Letter 100 points
  • Team Sports are offered by both the PSB as well
    as HSSAA
  • PSB Team Sports 1 point
  • HSSAA Team Sports 3 points
  • Intramural Sports Points are awarded based on a
    participation percentage
  • lt50 attendance 0 points
  • 50 75 attendance 1 point
  • 75-100 attendance 3 points
  • Bonus Points Coaches discretion 2 points per
    team may be awarded for Captain and Assistant
    Captain positions

Academic Letter 30 points
  • Greater than 75 OR Level 3 1 point
  • (Marks are based on each semesters final grade)
  • 4 Courses / semester gives you a maximum
    earning potential of 8 points per year
  • Any course that does not rely on a grading system
    up to 8 points earned per year.
  • Bonus points awarded for University level courses
    taken in the Hearing High school

  • REWARDS
  • All participants will receive their first t-shirt
    free. Additional t-shirts (lost) must be
    purchased.
  • Points earned go toward both Individual rewards
    and team rewards
  • Team winners 1 house / year
  • Individual rewards
  • TOTAL POINTS EARNS YOU A LETTER
  • (Academic Citizenship Athletic)
  • TWO LETTERS TBA
  • THREE LETTERS SCHOOL RING

The Transition Phase
  • Students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 will have
    difficulty earning the total points, so the point
    requirements are adjusted depending on their
    grade level as of September 2005.

Example Student - Jane Smith
(A Grade 12 Student)
  • Jane needs 3 more points (3 classes above 75) in
    order to earn her Academic Letter.
  • She needs 11 more points to earn her Citizenship
    Letter.
  • She needs 14 more points to earn her Athletic
    Letter.

Your First Task Find Your Team
  • Look around the room You will see five HOUSE
    colours on the wall.
  • On my signal , everyone stand up and fold your
    chairs!! Your chairs will travel with you!
  • Go to the colour team you think you belong to!
  • Staff will check your names and separate you into
    two groups.
  • Once separated, the students who are in the
    appropriate place will sit down and receive their
    t-shirts.
  • Students who are incorrectly placed will return
    to the centre and wait further instructions.
  • First round correct placement 25 points /
    student
  • 2nd round correct placement 20 points /
    student and so on.
  • Points will be totalled at the end and a winning
    House colour will be announced!
  • Ready..
  • GO!
