Title: Whats New

1
Whats New
  • At the Missouri Census Data Center
  • July, 2004
  • John BlodgettOffice of Social Economic Data
    Analysis

2
In a Nutshell
  • Dexter and uexplore
  • Better metadata for the data archive
  • New Improved CAPS application
  • New data files
  • New geography CBSAs
  • Other

3
Uexplore/Dexter
  • These two may seem like the same thing to the
casual user. But they are distinct components of
our system for accessing the MCDC data archive.
  • Uexplore is the navigational tool that you use to
    find and select files.
  • Dexter is the tool used to extract data from the
    archive database files.

4
Uexplore Enhancements
  • Much better looking. From black on white text to
    multicolored with textured background.
  • Checks for and highlights special files
  • Datasets.html
  • index.html
  • See, for example, mcdc2.missouri.edu/cgi-bin/uexpl
    ore?/pub/data/sf32000x

5
Uexplore Before
6
Uexplore After
7
Uexplore Enhancements (cont)
  • Recently modified files highlighted with new
    icon.
  • Directory descriptive text at top of page.
  • Pages have links to related web pages (uexplore,
MCDC OSEDA home pages, an e-mail link for
    feedback.)
  • Fewer irrelevant files shown.

8
Uexplore enhancements (cont)
  • Better access to SAS code files displays
.sas/.log/.lst files with same name on 1 line
(see any Tools directory for example).
  • Displays the SAS file in browser instead of
    invoking any plugin application.
  • It will recognize files stored on a different
    server and provide remote access.

9
Dexter
  • The new Data Extracter application.
  • Replaces the old xtract/xtract2/xtract3 modules
    written in 1996.
  • Emulates the functionality of the old modules but
does it all with a single form to fill out (not
    3) and does it much faster.
  • A link to detailed metadata is provided if
available (same as Datasets.html details pages).

10
Dexter (cont)
  • Supports pdf output format.
  • Always shows variable labels as well as names on
    drop-down select lists.
  • New variable list filters help users navigate
thru very long list in Sec III.
  • Identifiers separate from Numerics in variable
    selection section.

11
Dexter Tutorial
  • Available online (from uexplore home page, for
    example).
  • PowerPoint presentation. Over 75 slides.
  • Available in html format for ppt-impaired.
  • Used in spring workshops takes about 2 hrs.
(Much longer if you follow the links).
  • Done in Dec 03, just prior to uexplore
    enhancements. (Nostalgic screen shots).

12
Improved Metadata
  • Datasets.html files are your window to the new
    metadata.
  • The metadata is actually stored in meta-datasets
    with the special name datasets.
  • Fewer than half of our filetype data directories
    have these created thus far.
  • But there has been very significant progress in
    the past year.

13
A Datasets.html Page

Details Metadata Page
15
Key Values
16
Detailed Metadata
  • As provided on the Details page linked to from
    the Datasets.html page.
  • Detailed Usage Notes, description, a link to the
program that created it and oftentimes links to
    other sources of metadata.
  • Old uexplore system had only in-line and very
simplistic metadata was intended for use mostly
by people who knew the data.

17
New and Improved CAPS
18
CAPS Enhancements
  • Uses very small-area (split BG) data anywhere in
    the US (not just Mo).
  • Allows entering a ZIP code for the location.
  • Generates a report showing pop counts for
    circles/counties. (Reassurance feature.)
  • Usage notes page enhanced.

19
New Data Files
  • All the basic products from the 2000 Census have
    been released.
  • We did add to our collection some old files for
    all states
  • 5 PUMS files
  • Sf3 files Summary level 090 only (for CAPS)
  • We are now getting the special tab products.
  • More files but less information, in some cases.

20
EEO Special Tab
  • Equal Employment Opportunity files. Counts of
persons by various categories and geographies.
  • Competes with Summary File 4 for the data product
requiring the most effort for the least value
    returned.
  • New geographic entity County Set . Groups of
    counties lt 50,000.
  • We created extensive metadata but it still
requires a commitment to use these files.

21
CTPP2000
  • Census Transportation Planning Package data
    intended for transportation planners.
  • Very detailed tables related mostly to commuting
    questions.
  • There are really 3 sets of tables residence
    geography workplace geography and workflow
(showing both). We have only processed the
    residence-based tables.
  • Ctppx filetype involves our own custom
    extraction. Funded by MoDOT.

22
Economic Indicators for MO
  • Taxsales taxable sales data for Missouri by
county/SIC code. For years 2000 thru 2003. (Lots
    of suppression for detailed SICs).
  • Empwage Employment and wage data based on ES-202
    files for Missouri.
  • These are both new filetypes. Access using
uexplore home page, under Economic Indicators.
  • Added the 2003 data for the bankdeps collection.

23
New Pop Estimates
  • County level by age, sex, race, hispanic 02.
    (added in November)
  • County level with components of change 03.
    (April)
  • Sub-county level (place MCD) 03. (June)
  • Data for the entire US with Mo subsets.
  • Enhanced with change pctchange vars.

24
New Geography CBSAs(Core based statistical
areas)
  • Not really new this year but this was the first
year we got to see reports that used these new
    units.See web pages
  • http//mcdc2.missouri.edu/webrepts/geography/mocbs
as03.pdf -- definitions of Mo CBSAs.
  • http//mcdc2.missouri.edu/webrepts/casrh/mor2cbsa.
pdf-- casrh estimates aggregated to CBSAs for
    Mo.
  • CBSA is an umbrella term for Metropolitan and
    Micropolitan statistical areas.

25
Other
  • Stats Indiana link from applinks for states and
counties anywhere in U.S. (see, for example, Mo
    County Data Map )
  • Updated ZIP resources page.
  • FIPS county codes, 03 pop ests and Status
reports for entire US (referenced from our
    Miscellaneous Geographic Reference Reports page.

26
Other (cont)
  • Very detailed sf32000-based demographic profile
reports for larger geographic areas nationwide.
    See mcdc2.missouri.edu/webrepts/sdcprofiles3/us/
  • Note that we have not covered any new
mapping-related tools those will be covered by
    Nathan.
