Title: The Pilot Drilling Control Ltd Casing Scraper generates its axial loading by utilising the known mec

Casing Scraper
  • The Pilot Drilling Control Ltd Casing Scraper
generates its axial loading by utilising the
    known mechanical properties and characteristics
of the drillpipe. The tools concept is based upon
a simply supported beam that undergoes deflection
at its midpoint. This novel idea ensures that the
scraper elements are in contact with the casing
wall at all times and in any orientation of
pipeline, even through horizontal operation. By
having a pair of eccentric scraping cam sleeves
mounted in opposite orientation some distance
apart, a slight bend can be induced into the
pipe. The pipes natural reaction to rectify this
bend is what supplies the scraping cam sections
of the tool with the axial force they require.

Casing Scraper
  • Description
  • As with any casing scraping device, this tool
relies on its ability to apply an axial loading
to the internal wall of the casing. The industry
standard solution is to use mechanisms
incorporating spring loaded blades. Tools of this
nature have obvious inherent faults they lose
functionality in horizontal or lateral casing,
they have large servicing requirements as they
incorporate moving parts and they also introduce
the risk of losing removable parts down hole.
  • Benefits
  • Fully function either through Rotary or Static
    operation.
  • 100 radial contact with the casing.
  • Operate fully in horizontal or lateral holes.
  • Successfully negotiate high dog legs.
  • Scrape 360deg of the casing - even when not
    rotating.
  • Eliminate the need for moving parts.
  • Operate without the risk of losing parts
    down-hole.

Features
  • The tool has four eccentric Scraping cams. Each
cam faces a different direction, 90 relative to
the previous. This aspect of the design results
in the tool being able to scrape 100 of the
casing, even when being used without revolution.
This complete contact is illustrated below.
  • Complete Radial Contact

Tool Assembly
  • The tool can either be assembled on the drill
floor or supplied pre-assembled and torqued to
    current standards.
  • As the tool has no moving parts the assembly
procedure is very simple. Each of the eccentric
cams needs to be offset by 90 from the previous.
The position of each cam is constrained by
internal splines located on the pin end of each
centre-pipe section. When assembled on the rig
floor, the cam would be sat on the pipe in the
slips, the pin section with splines would be
held above. The cam would be correctly positioned
and the pipe above lowered until the splines are
engaged. Once engaged the cam is lifted and the
tool joint simply needs to be torqued up. Once
the cams are positioned and the joints are
torqued the tool is ready for deployment.
