Title: DRILL PRESS SAFETY

1
DRILL PRESS SAFETY
2
SPECIFIC PURPOSE
  • To drill holes of various diameters and depths
    with accuracy and consistency.

3
SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES
  • Hold or clamp work securely to the table.
  • Place drill bit into chuck straight and tighten
    it securely.
  • Always keep your fingers at least 4" away from
    the rotating tool.
  • 4. Always remove the chuck key before starting
    the machine.

4
DIFFERENT DRILLING OPTIONS
  • Twist Drill Bits
  • Used to bore through the material. Cuts with a
twisting action. Can cause wood grain to tear
    out.
  • Brad Point Bits
  • Sharp brad point with outer cutting spurs make
hole location easy accurate. Ideal for cutting
    WOOD ONLY.

5
Drilling Options Cont
  • Countersink Bit
  • Cone shaped. Enlarges the top of the hole so a
screw can be driven flush with the surface.
  • Hole Saw
  • Has a pilot bit surrounded by a larger saw tooth
cutter. Used for cutting larger holes.
  • Plug Cutter
  • Cuts plugs used to fill the hole cut by a
    countersink. 3/8 Diameter.

6
Drilling Options Cont
  • Forstner Bit
  • For drilling a smooth, shallow flat bottomed
    hole.
  • Spade (Speed) Bit
  • Ideal for drilling holes quickly leaving a rough
    surface finish.

7
USEFULL TIPS
  1. Ease up on the drilling pressure as the drill
    breaks through the material.
  2. Place a piece of scrap stock under work being
drilled so the bit does not hit the steel table.
  3. Adjust table to proper height.
  4. Set depth stop to control desired drilling depth.

8
What a DEPTH STOP is and how to use it.
  • Controls how far the bit can plunge into the
    material.
  • Draw a pencil line on the edge of your stock.
  • Pull feed lever until the drill bit is lowered to
    the pencil line.
  • Move adjustment nut on the depth stop to limit
drilling to the depth of the pencil line
