Title: FACULTY ENHANCEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

1
FACULTY ENHANCEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
  • Lex A. Akers
  • Indira Chatterjee
  • John Mathews
  • Ken Connor
  • Hede Ma

2
The Challenge
  • To fulfill the vision for the field of
nanostructure and technology, it is vital to
invest in its most critical resource, its
    workers.
  • Educating these new researchers and their
    teachers is a major challenge.
  • This field is comprehensive, most materials
exhibit novel behaviors in the nanometer regime.

3
Tenure and Promotion
  • NSF must assure University can give shared credit
  • Chairs need to help articulate the importance of
    work to faculty and administrators
  • Need to do some of work off campus so need to be
able to demonstrate importance to your University

4
National Laboratories
  • 80 of papers in area come from host lab
  • Make sure the host is a service center
  • Collaborators at host lab
  • Mentors
  • Some labs will need to be local
  • Focused workshops and hands on training
  • Better geographical distribution of host labs

5
Faculty Education
  • New faculty getting started
  • Learning modules
  • Educational collaborators
  • Faculty learn by hands on activities

6
Recommendations
  • ECEDHA develop a document on best practices for
tenure and promotion of faculty in
    multi-disciplinary research programs such as
    nanotechnology.
  • Chairs need to articulate and promote the
opportunities and impact of nanotechnology for
universities, industry, and society and the
importance of faculty working in the area.

7
Recommendations
  • ECEDHA and NSF develop and support focused
workshops and on-site laboratory experiences for
    faculty in nanotechnology.
  • Have select departments use and provide feedback
on learning modular developed at National Lab
facilities. Also, have faculty at institutions
without major research programs link with faculty
    at institutions leading the research.
