University of California Update

• Comprehensive Review process for admissions
  includes a g courses in grades 10 11, number
  of a-g courses, number of AP/Honors, quality of
  the senior year, extra-curricular activities,
  special talents
• New MINIMUM GPA of 3.0 only
• UC Merced is newest U.C. campus
• Course validation is eliminated

California State University Updates

• CSU will not require the new writing test on
  ACT/SAT, but may use it for placement purposes
• Course validation is for math, Chemistry and
  foreign language only
• EAP- Optional STAR test can replace ELM and EPT
  Placement exams

CA Community College Update

• Transfer students should take a-g requirements,
  especially MATH
• DUSD Concurrent Enrollment Program
• LPC Early Admissions Program

PSAT for Juniors

• Qualify for the National Merit Scholarship
  Competition
• Given on Saturday, October 21st
• Cost is 20
• Will receive results with test booklet and answer
  key-becomes an excellent study guide for SAT in
  Spring

College Entrance Testing-

• CSU requires either the SAT or ACT. May is a
  good time to take the SAT. ACT will be in June.
  Register as soon as possible for both/either!
• UC requires the SAT or ACT and two SAT II
  (subject area) tests. June is a good time to
  take these. Students may take three in a sitting.

California Community Colleges/ Trade and
Specialty Schools

• No tests are required! However, if a student
  would like to attend community college, if they
  score a 550 or above on the Critical Reading or
  Math portion of the SAT, they will be exempt from
  either math or English testing.

SAT II - Other Subject Area Tests required for
U.C.

• Foreign Language
• Reading only - French, German, Modern Hebrew,
  Italian, Latin, Spanish.
• Reading and Listening - Chinese, French, German,
  Japanese, Korean, Spanish.
• Other tests include U.S. History, World History,
  Biology, Math II C, Chemistry and Physics.
• Take tests after completing curriculum!

ASVAB

• Career Interest and Skills Inventory
• 3 hours given on November 15
• Free of charge
• Sign up with Mrs. Rubio
• Will receive results a month later with career
  cluster workbook for further exploration
• Mandatory for Armed Services

Tri-Valley ROP-

• Great option for Senior Year if undecided
• Career-oriented classes
• Try out a career interest or college major
• Some classes are a-g approved
• Some classes have articulation agreements with
  local community colleges for students to earn
  college credit after graduation

Fall Junior Musts-

• Sign up for the PSAT and ASVAB
• Honors Society-Apply for CSF and Academic Block
  D in October
• Join school clubs, community activities, sports
• Attend Fall Preview Days

Winter Junior Musts-

• Review PSAT results
• Visit colleges during Winter Break
• Register for the March-June SAT/ACT tests
  on-line
• Arrange for job shadowing/mentor opportunity
  thru Career Center
• Sign up for Concurrent Enrollment classes at
  community college or other schools

Spring Junior Musts-

• Select a rigorous senior year of classes,
  including math and/or include ROP classes
• Take a SAT test prep class if necessary
• Take SAT/ACT/AP exams
• Apply for Academic Block D and CSF
• Attend Spring College Open House Events
• Sign up for summer school if necessary
• Begin scholarship search
• Research volunteer/community service

Making Your Senior Year Sane

• Prep work/research in Junior year will make
  senior year easier and less stressful.
• Talking with your counselor in the Junior year is
  a good idea. We can help you by asking questions
  that may help narrow down your choices/see new
  options.
• Utilize the Internet for research. It helps
  weed out schools or find new ones.

• Come to our financial aid presentation on
  February 1st so youll know what to expect in
  senior year.
• Financial aid is for ALL schools!
• Do your tax information early so that when your
  student is a senior, youll have good facts to
  work with on the FAFSA (Free Application for
  Federal Student Aid).
• Feel free to contact the Counseling and Career
  Center staff anytime.
