Title: JSC Perspective

1
JSC Perspective
  • World Climate Research Programme
  • Antonio J. Busalacchi
  • ESSIC, University of Maryland
  • Chair, JSC WCRP

2
WCRP Observation and Assimilation Panel (WOAP)
  • Coordinates with the WCRP/GCOS co-sponsored
panels AOPC (Atmospheric Observation Panel for
Climate) and OOPC (Ocean Observation Panel for
Climate) and the GCOS Terrestrial Observation
Panel for Climate (TOPC) to establish high
quality and long-lived observations of the
    climate.
  • WCRP projects and contributors have led
atmospheric re-analysis for 20 years and are now
closely involved in the development of ocean
re-analysis and in future consideration of whole
    Earth system re-analysis

3
  • WCRP Review
  • Links to IGBP
  • Links to key user groups
  • What are the WOAP activities in this regard?
  • What are the activities and outcomes of WOAP
above and beyond that of the core projects?
(i.e., were it not for WOAP)

4
  • With an appropriate budget and staffing, what are
    the expected activities, accomplishments, and
outcomes of WOAP over the next 1,3,5 years?
  • Expected input of WOAP to WCC-3 and Ocean Obs 09?

5
  • Implementation of WCRP Strategic Framework
  • WOAP is viewed as key to the integration and
oversight of obs and analysis across the WCRP

6
  • All elements of the WCRP are being asked
  • What science will be addressed between now and
    2013?
  • What will need to be continued?
  • Emerging priorities post-2013
  • Legacy data sets
  • Approach to data management

7
What is needed?
  • Greater synergy between in situ and space-based
    observations
  • Greater dialogue (i.e., requirements) between
climate prediction and observing components of
    WCRP
  • A routine climate system state estimation
    activity inclusive of observational error
    estimates
  • Sustained data/information delivery plan for
access and archival of research observations
  • Infrastructure to ensure climate quality,
    continuity, and reprocessing capabilities
