Title: NEW PERSPECTIVES EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE EDUCATION: ASTRONAUT PHOTOGRAPHY RESOURCES

1
ABSTRACT Earth System Science education
integrates systems on local, regional, and global
scales. Existing astronaut photography of the
Earth offers unique views of Earth at these
scales. High- and low-oblique photographs present
three-dimensional perspectives, and offer
regional views that demonstrate connections among
diverse landscape elements including
physiography, hydrology, precipitation, and land
cover. Multiple viewing directions, angles, and
scales permit observation of large-scale Earth
features from multiple perspectives, allowing
students to observe objects from global to
regional and local scales. Astronaut photographs
also document Earth System changes in the 4th
dimension, allowing change detection and
monitoring capabilities. The current archive of
astronaut photography (http//eol.jsc.nasa.gov/)
includes over 600,000 acquisitions acquired over
more than 40 years over 150,000 of these are
from the ISS. The site also includes tutorials,
topical collections, research, publications, and
educational resources.
