Title: Tissues Epithelial and Blood

1
Section 10.2
  • Tissues- Epithelial and Blood

2
Tissues
  • Groups of cells that have a similar function
  • 5 types
  • Epithelial
  • Blood
  • Connective
  • Muscle
  • Nervous

3
Epithelial Tissue
  • Small flat cells- tightly packed
  • Protects your body
  • Covers outside of body- outer portion of skin
  • Covers many cavities- spaces inside the bodys
    digestive and respiratory systems
  • Protects the body from injuries, H2O loss, germs
  • Grows with body

4
More Epithelial Tissue
  • We loose millions every day
  • 75 of house dust is epithelial skin
  • Helps control temperature
  • Pores allow skin to sweat and release heat
  • Epithelial tissue has many functions
  • In digestive system, produces mucous
  • In lungs, traps dust to clean lungs

5
Blood Tissue
  • Bodys transportation system
  • Carries heat, gases, minerals, wastes, food,
    hormones, and disease fighting chemicals.

6
Parts of Blood
  • 1. Plasma- clear, yellowish liquid
  • Carries food to cells
  • Carries waste to kidneys
  • Helps to form blood clots

7
Parts of Blood
  • 2. Platelets- small pieces of cells without a
    nucleus

8
Parts of Blood
  • 3. Red Blood Cells (RBC)- gives blood its color
  • Carries oxygen to body
  • Contain hemoglobin- protein that allows RBC to
    carry oxygen
  • Carries CO2 back to lungs to be released
  • RBC does not have a nucleus
  • RBC does not live long
  • New RBC made in bone marrow.

9
Parts of Blood
  • 4. White Blood Cells (WBC)- colorless cells
  • Less numerous than RBC
  • Play a role in fighting infection
  • Some WBC engulf invading bacteria
  • Some WBC produce antibodies- chemicals that kill
    the foreign bacteria
  • Dead WBC form pus at the site of infection

10
Donating Blood
  • Must be 17 years old and weigh at least 110
    pounds.
  • Take medical history and temperature, pulse,
    blood pressure and weight.
  • Small amount of blood will be tested to make sure
that there are enough RBC or hemoglobin in blood
  • Takes about 10 minutes to donate.
  • Red Cross tests blood before it is given to
    someone else
