Things to Know About Important Parts of the Emission Control System

Description:

The emission control system is one of the most important systems in your car and it needs to be maintained throughout its lifetime. Moreover, due to the rise in the pollution level, stringent laws and regulations are being implemented in the automobile industry to check vehicular emission. In this context, it is imperative for every car owner to know about the various important parts of the emission control system. 1
Things to Know About Important Parts of the
Emission Control System
2
The internal combustion engine in a car produces
toxic gases and as per international obligations
the emission level can't exceed beyond a limit.
3
Moreover, due to this reason vehicle
manufacturers are increasingly giving stress to
the emission control systems.
4
Furthermore, there are certain vital components
of the emission control system in your car which
play a crucial role in controlling the emission
caused by your car.
5
Here are the things that you must know about the
important parts of the emission control system.
6
PCV valve
Increased Fuel Efficiency
7
PCV valve works to take the vapors produced in
the crankcase at the time of the combustion
channel them into the air/fuel intake system to
be burned during the combustion process.
8
These vapors have the potential to dilute the
air/fuel mixture which can affect the performance
of the engine need constant monitoring and this
is done by the PCV valve.
9
The valve allows a very little amount of vapors
into the intake system at the idle condition as
the air/fuel mixture is in a critical state.
10
However, during high speeds more amount of vapors
is allowed into the intake system because the
mixture is safe the pressure in the engine is
greater.
11
Increased Fuel Efficiency
Catalytic converter
12
There are several ways to control automotive
emissions and one of the methods is to carry out
a complete combustion so that there are fewer
by-products.
13
However, in many vehicles an additional area for
oxidation or combustion is also provided and this
extra area is called a catalytic converter.
14
The catalytic converter is located in the
exhaust system ahead of the muffler and consists
of pellets or honeycomb made of platinum or
palladium that is located inside the converter.
15
They are used as a catalyst to convert the
hydrocarbons carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide
and water which is less harmful on the
environment.
16
Increased Fuel Efficiency
Catalytic converter
17
EGR valve plays a stellar role in controlling
the emission from the car as the purpose of the
EGR valve is to reduce the temperature inside the
combustion chamber.
18
As the excessive temperature inside the
combustion chamber creates oxides of nitrogen
which is a major pollutant and the EGR valve is
the most effective component to control the
oxides of nitrogen.
19
However, the EGR valve design affects the
engine's performance as because the design of the
engine is not compatible with the EGR valve.
20
Due to this the amount of exhaust entering the
intake system has to be monitored controlled
and this is done through a series of electrical
and vacuum switches.
