The Role of Transplant in Myeloma Treatment
  • The stem cell transplant helps the myeloma
patients by getting high dose of chemotherapy
which helps in killing the bone marrow cells. It
helps the body to develop healthy blood forming
stem cells. The stem cell was previously known as
a bone marrow transplant as the cells were
developed within the bone marrow transplant.
  • The stem cell transplant is generally used to
treat the problem of multiple myeloma. Before the
transplant was available in the market, there
were several drugs available to reduce the number
of myeloma cells in the body.

 Whats is multiple myeloma?
  • It is a type of white blood cells and also the
plasma cells when they multiples in number.
Typically, they generate antibodies that helps in
fighting against infections. While in multiple
myeloma, they release more than required protein
or immunoglobulin into blood and bones. These
cells builds up overall in the human body which
is the main cause of organ damage. The stem cell
transplant in uganda is the most effective
treatment for multiple myeloma. The plasma cells
are covered with blood cells in bone. this
release chemicals that boost other cells to get
dissolved in the bone. This develops the bone
weak which is known as lytic lesions. As a
multiple myeloma condition of the patient gets
worse, the plasma cells starts to spill out of
the bone marrow and spread out in the whole body
which is the chief cause of organ damage.

Autologous transplants
  • In a autologous transplant procedure, the
patient's own stem cells are eliminated from
their peripheral blood or bone marrow before the
transplant. The cells are stored safely unless
they are required for the transplant procedure.
Then the myeloma patient gets the treatment like
a high dose chemotherapy (at times including
radiation) to damage the cancer cells. When the
procedure completes, the stem cells stored are
given back to the patients blood. This is a
standard Myeloma Treatment in uganda for
patients. However, any autologous transplant can
treat myeloma for years though it doesn't cure
cancer completely as it often returns.

Allogeneic transplants
  • A patient gets a blood forming stem cells in an
allogeneic stem cell transplant technique from
another donor. The treatment is most effective
when the donors cells are matched closely with
the patient cells type. This is the chance when
the donos is related closely to the patient such
as a sister or a brother. the allogeneic
transplant is much more riskier than the
autologous transplant as they may be better at
fight cancer cells like for Leukaemia Treatment
in uganda. This is because of the donor cells may
destroy the myeloma cells. This process is known
    graft vs. tumor effect.
