Title: MOST COMMON TYPES OF BRAKES AND BRAKE SYSTEMS
1(No Transcript)
2- Brake systems are not easily seen or very
noticeable from the vehicle's interior and can be
quite complicated. A brake system is an assembly
of different parts that ensure your vehicle's
brakes work smoothly in different driving
conditions and situations. The part of the brake
system that you can see is visible through your
wheel where you will see a rotor and caliper.
3- The brake system is used to slow you down or
bring a moving vehicle to a halt brakes are
installed in automobiles, motorcycles, trains,
and even on airplanes.
4- Depending on the vehicle and preference, there
are different types of brakes and brake systems.

6Electronic Magnetic Brake System
A breakthrough in the brake system,
electromagnetic brakes (also known as EM brakes
or electro-mechanical brakes) use electromagnetic
force to apply friction which makes a vehicle
stop or slow down. This type can be seen in most
hybrid cars. Its popularity dates back in the
mid-20th century, when it was most commonly found
on trains and trams.
7Hydraulic Brake System
- A hydraulic brake system transfers pressure
through the brake and pedal by using brake fluid.
It is composed of a master cylinder and connected
by a variety of metal piping and rubber fittings
which are attached to the cylinders of the wheel.
It first originated in 1914, when a racer
developed it for his race cars.
8Frictional Brake System
Frictional brake systems are generally found in
modern vehicles. As the name itself implies,
frictional brakes use friction to bring a vehicle
to a stop. They normally have a rotating
apparatus, a non-moving pad and a revolving
weather surface. They are service brakes and
typically found in two forms brake pads and
brake shoes.
9Servo Brake System
- This is another brake system most commonly set up
in cars. This brake uses a component called
vacuum servo that helps in decreasing a drivers
brake effort. Moreover, these braking systems
only work while the engine is running

11Disc Brakes
- This type of brake is considered to be the best
among its kind. It uses calipers and rotors to
create friction. It also has a disc that is
installed behind the wheel. As the brake shoe is
pressed, the disc is pressed against the wheel,
causing the vehicle to stop. This kind of brake
works best for cars, motorcycles and even in
bikes.
12Drum Brakes
- This is a type of brake that employs a metal
brake drum attached behind the wheel to slow down
the spinning of a vehicles tires. It uses oil
pressure instead of air pressure in order to
function. Compared to other brakes, drum brakes
are usually harder to maintain and do not last
long, which makes them less effective. With that,
most owners have them replaced with disc brakes
instead.
13Air Brakes
- An air brake is also typically installed with
either a drum or a disc brake, but uses
compressed air to create friction. It is employed
in two different mechanisms in motor vehicles
such as trains and cars and in airplanes.
14- Knowing the ins and outs of your braking system
might seem irrelevant, but remember, the more you
know about these vital systems, the better.
